The Golden State Warriors have emerged as surprise contenders to sign a two-time NBA MVP.
The Warriors have had a quiet offseason. They remain the only team in the NBA to have not signed or re-signed a player. They were in the market to sign Al Horford from the Boston Celtics, but ongoing contract negotiations with Jonathan Kuminga have stalled their offseason.

Golden State’s conservatism has now been explained, however, as they seek to enter the sweepstakes for an NBA superstar to pair with legend Steph Curry.
Golden State Warriors look to target Giannis Antetokounmpo
The Warriors and Kuminga have been unable to reach an agreement on his contract value thus far, sparking speculation about whether he is available for trade. However, the Warriors have a high price for Kuminga, and it has everything to do with Milwaukee Bucks MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Tim Kawakami, writing for the San Francisco Standard, explained, “There’s another reason why the Warriors don’t want to give Kuminga away for less than his full trade value:
“Like every other smart team, they’re trying to maintain every asset they’ve got so they’re ready once and if the Giannis Antetokounmpo market heats up.
The Warriors aren’t rushing to move Jonathan Kuminga unless it’s for full value — they want to keep their assets in case the market for Giannis Antetokounmpo heats up, per @timkawakami.

“If you’re looking to build a trade around a young player who could step right into a barren roster and give a transitioning team a burst of energy … well, I think the Warriors might have a candidate to bring up if Milwaukee ever asks.”
Antetokounmpo could become available for trade, as the NBA champion contemplates his future. The Greek superstar is weighing his ability to win another title against Antetokounmpo’s known love of Milwaukee.
If he does decide to request a trade, Antetokounmpo will have titles on his mind, and pairing him with Curry in Golden State would be a match made in heaven.
Potential Golden State Warriors trade packages for Giannis Antetokounmpo
The Warriors would have to arrange a sign-and-trade with the Bucks in order to trade away Kuminga, but in doing so, they can piece together an enticing trade package for Milwaukee.
Kuminga and promising young talent can be packaged alongside Moses Moody, Trayce Jackson-Davis, and some of the Warriors’ first-round picks, in exchange for Antetokounmpo.
Alternatively, if the Bucks wanted some veteran talent in exchange; they could take on Jimmy Butler or Draymond Green, wait for their salaries to expire, then attack free agency in 2027.
Realistically, the Warriors need to hold on to their assets in order to bring Antetokounmpo in and give Curry one last run at a championship.
