For safety Damar Hamlin, Bills fans might be watching his last few games in a Bills uniform. That, of course, is assuming Hamlin returns. Hamlin has been on injured reserve since Week 6 with a pectoral injury. He’s been eligible to return to the field since Week 11, but has yet to have his 21-day window opened. 

Bills head coach Sean McDermott said last Friday it was possible Hamlin returns this season, but that he hadn’t “gotten a recent update from our training staff as far as that goes.”

Of course, Hamlin’s injury status isn’t entirely why Bills fans should prepare for his exit. Hamlin’s contract ends after this season. The former sixth-round pick signed a one-year, $2 million deal ahead of the season, but has played in just five games, logging a single tackle.

While Hamlin has been on IR, other safeties have stepped up for the Bills. Obviously, Jordan Poyer returned to the team and has been a heavy contributor as he once was, but Cole Bishop has also stepped up in a big way for the defense.

The Bills also picked up Darnell Savage two weeks ago, and, like Hamlin, Taylor Rapp is also on Injured Reserve with a knee injury and is eligible to return, though a return for him this season is just as murky. 

While Savage isn’t a lock to return and Poyer is expected to retire, the Bills still have a crowded safety room. If Hamlin does sign back with the Bills, he’d likely still be behind Bishop and Rapp on the depth chart heading into next season. Hamlin will be 28 next season, and after starting 14 games in 2024, it wouldn’t be surprising if he’d prefer a shot at being a long-term starter elsewhere as opposed to being a backup in Buffalo once again.

It goes without saying that Hamlin is a beloved and respected figure in Buffalo. His football career will always revolve around the night he suffered cardiac arrest on the field against the Cincinnati Bengals in January 2023, and subsequently making a heroic comeback to the sport. His charity and community work beyond football have far exceeded his impact on the field ever could, too.

Still, the business of football for a player is playing and contributing on the field. While Hamlin has dealt with a variety of injuries, he’s shown in his 27 career starts with Buffalo that he can help a defense out, given the opportunity. But as the season winds down, Bills fans may have to concede that his next opportunity may have to come with a new NFL franchise in 2026.

Several players also face questions about their future with the team, including Rashan Gary. The Packers need their 2019 first-round pick to elevate his play following Micah Parsons’ season-ending injury, both for the short-term and also to ensure he’s part of Matt LaFleur’s long-term plans.

It’s the most wonderful time of year, sure, but for many Packers, it’s also the most important time of the season. These players could have everything on the line.

What is going on with Rashan Gary?

He flew out of the gates this season, recording 7.5 sacks, 13 quarterback hits, and seven tackles for loss in the Packers’ opening seven games. Pro Football Focus had him at 26 pressures. The Michigan product looked on track to shatter his previous career bests in sacks and hits, becoming the perfect complement to Parsons.

Gary’s pass-rush production has completely disappeared. Since Week 9, he has zero sacks, six quarterback hits, and zero tackles for loss. PFF has him at 25 pressures.

The Packers need him now more than ever. While Gary is still showing up in run defense, he just isn’t making a consistent impact as a pass rusher, leaving the Packers with a tough decision.

Barring a strong finish to the season, Green Bay may need to trade or release the edge defender they selected 12th overall almost seven years ago.

Keisean Nixon

The Packers rolled the dice with Keisean Nixon, and it hasn’t worked. Despite becoming a two-time All-Pro returner, Nixon publicly stated he no longer wanted return kicks at the conclusion of last season. Instead, he believed he could become the CB1.

Nixon surprisingly got his wish, but the experiment is failing.

While he showed some encouraging signs early in the season and has undoubtedly made some big plays, like his game-sealing interception against the Chicago Bears, the negatives far outweigh the positives.

Nixon allowed both touchdowns at Soldier Field last week, a blown coverage on the game-tying pass, and then he just got flat-out beaten by DJ Moore on the game-winner. Worse still, he has allowed a perfect passer rating to Bo Nix and Caleb Williams in the past two games, per Pro Football Focus.

It’s just nowhere near good enough. The Packers no longer have a dominant pass rush to mask the problems in the secondary. Quarterbacks keep targeting Nixon, and it’s working.

What’s his best role moving forward? A backup corner? Back to returning kicks? With his cap hit soaring to $7.2 million in 2026, the Packers have a decision to make. They would save $5 million by moving on.

Brenton Cox Jr.

Brenton Cox Jr. has a big opportunity in front of him. The Packers need a pass-rusher to step up without Parsons. Cox has just returned from injured reserve, and he could be the player to make that impact.

The former undrafted free agent impressed in the second half of last season after the Packers traded Preston Smith, and he may need a similar run of performances this year to solidify his spot moving forward. Cox is a restricted free agent in the offseason, and he will face competition if he returns.

Along with Parsons’ return from injury in 2026, Cox could face competition from Lukas Van Ness, Barryn Sorrell, Collin Oliver, and Gary (depending on his future). Cox has limited time to show why the Packers should bring him back.

Nazir Stackhouse

There was some excitement when the Packers signed undrafted rookie Nazir Stackhouse moments after the 2025 NFL Draft concluded, but so far, it hasn’t translated into on-field production.

Stackhouse has only played 114 snaps on defense, and the Packers have made him a healthy scratch throughout December. The rookie has Green Bay’s third-worst PFF defensive grade. The expectation was that Stackhouse wouldn’t offer much as a pass-rusher but could play a rotational role as a two-down run-stopper, but his 44.1 PFF run defense grade is also one of the team’s worst.

The Packers recently signed Jordon Riley to a two-year deal, and they will undoubtedly add even more competition in the offseason. Stackhouse may not make the 2026 roster, and it’s not even guaranteed he’ll play again this season.

While these games may not technically matter to the Vikings, as they’ve been officially eliminated from postseason contention, they undoubtedly matter to safety Harrison Smith, as these may genuinely be the final two games of his illustrious career.

And if that is indeed the case, Minnesota fans should savor these final moments, as he’s been one of the most consistent and productive defensive players ever to wear the purple and gold.

Even if Harrison Smith wants to keep playing, the Minnesota Vikings might not be able to afford to re-sign him

Taken by the Vikings in the first round of the 2012 draft, Smith, following Sunday’s win over the Giants, has now played 205 career regular-season games for Minnesota, good for the fifth-most in franchise history behind only Jim Marshall (270), Mick Tingelhoff (242), Fred Cox (210), and Carl Eller (209).

And despite his physical style of play, the Notre Dame alum has appeared in at least 13 games in 13 of his 14 seasons, the only exception being his second year in 2013, when an injury to his left foot cost him eight games.

It was just after that season that Smith started playing the best football of his career, notching a career-high five interceptions during the 2014 campaign, a total he matched three additional times.

In 2015, he began a seven-season stretch that saw him earn six trips to the Pro Bowl and a pair of All-Pro selections, making the First Team in 2017 and the Second Team in 2018.

Including Sunday’s game against New York, Smith has recorded 1,177 total tackles, 49 tackles for a loss, 44 QB hits, 20.5 sacks, 13 forced fumbles, 10 fumble recoveries, 103 passes defended, and 38 interceptions, four of which he returned for touchdowns. That’s one incredible career right there.

Set to turn 37 on February 2, Smith hasn’t yet committed to retirement, saying just last week that he’s taking things day by day. In that same interview, however, he also stated that it’s “harder to go to practice” and “harder to get ready to go” for each game.

Don’t get things twisted, though, as anyone who has watched the Vikings this season knows he still brings plenty of intensity. Just ask Jaxson Dart.

Over the last few offseasons, Smith has taken some time to contemplate his future, and one would assume he’ll do the same once this season comes to a close.

But if he does decide he wants to return for a 15th season, he might have to do so at a highly reduced rate, as the Vikings are in a rough position in terms of salary cap space and may not be able to afford the same one-year, $11 million restructured contract they gave him earlier this year.

For long stretches this season, the San Francisco 49ers had to live without starting quarterback Brock Purdy. But he’s back now, and he’s fresh from one the best performances of his career Week 16.

Purdy carved up the Indianapolis Colts in a 48–27 win, going 25-of-34 for 295 yards and a career-high five touchdown passes. He finished with a very impressive 126.8 passer rating.

His efforts certainly didn’t go unnoticed, as the NFL named Purdy the NFC Offensive Player of the Week. The Niners QB joins running back Christian McCaffrey as the only players to win it for the 49ers this season.

“He did awesome, man,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said after beating the Colts, per 49ers Webzone. “Played really well. I got on him for a couple he missed, but it was pretty close to a perfect game, so he did a hell of a job.”

This Was 2nd NFC Player of the Week Win for 49ers QB Brock Purdy

This was the second time in his career Purdy was named as the NFC’s Offensive Player of the Week. The first was back in Week 11 of the 2023 season.

Through seven games this season, Purdy has thrown for 1,737 yards with 17 touchdowns and eight interceptions, with a 102.1 passer rating. He’s been on a bit of a tear recently. His performance agains tthe Colts game followed a three-touchdown outing against Tennessee in Week 15, giving him back-to-back games with three-plus TD passes.

Purdy’s 2025 campaign was disrupted by a toe injury earlier this season that left him inactive for a total of eight games. He sure looks healthy now, though, and his hot streak couldn’t be coming at a better time for the Niners.

Week 17 Preview: Bears at 49ers (Sunday Night Football)

Next up for Purdy and the 49ers are the Chicago Bears (11–4), who head to Levi’s Stadium for a 7:20 p.m. CT kickoff. Both teams are still chasing the NFC’s No. 1 seed.

Chicago’s pass defense is in the lower half of the league in terms of yards allowed (Dennis Allen’s unit is giving up 348.1 yards per game through the air). If Chicago can muddy his first read and tackle well enough to contain CMC’s run-after-catch game, the Bears have a chance to win this one.

“I think they just have really good athletes. They’ve got good ball skills,” Purdy said about Chicago’s defense. “When the ball’s in the air, they’re aggressive, they don’t hesitate. Obviously their guys have length and just athletic ability across the board. And I just feel like they’re really well-coached when it comes to being aggressive and not trying to second guess things.”

One huge storyline to monitor: San Francisco’s All-Pro tight end George Kittle left the Colts game with an ankle injury and is considered to have a chance to play against Chicago. It may be a slim one, but Kittle’s toughness knows no bounds. If he can go, he’s going to be a problem for Chicago.

It’ll be a huge matchup for both teams, but with Purdy playing as well as he has been, you have to like San Francisco’s chances.

The announcement comes at a particularly tough time for Dallas, who are already battling through a season riddled with setbacks. Overshown’s absence is a massive blow, especially considering his history of injuries that have plagued his young career. Drafted in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, Overshown showed immense promise but has been sidelined far more often than he’s been on the field. He missed his entire rookie season after tearing his ACL during the preseason, a devastating injury that kept him out of action for over a year.

This season hasn’t been much kinder. Overshown suffered another ACL tear in Week 14 of the 2024 campaign, forcing him to miss the first nine games of 2025 before making a triumphant return post-bye week. His comeback coincided with the Cowboys’ bold trade deadline moves, acquiring defensive lineman Quinnen Williams and linebacker Logan Wilson to bolster a struggling unit. In the 19 games he’s managed to play since being drafted, Overshown has proven his worth, bringing speed, instincts, and physicality to a linebacker corps that’s desperately needed stability.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer didn’t mince words when addressing Overshown’s latest setback following the Chargers game. “Tough week. Short week,” Schottenheimer said, his tone reflecting the frustration of dealing with yet another injury on a compressed timeline. “Tough week, so I think we’re holding our breath if we think he’ll be able to play. We’ll see, but tough with a short week.” With the team making it official on Wednesday, Overshown’s status remains uncertain even for the Week 18 finale against the New York Giants, leaving his future in limbo as the playoffs loom.

Overshown himself has remained optimistic amid the adversity. Upon his return earlier this season, he expressed eagerness to build on his performances after such a long rehab process. “It’s easy, fixable stuff, so I’m excited for this next game because I know that is, I won’t say it’s the worst I will ever play, but coming off 343 days, I can be way better than that,” he shared. Unfortunately, this concussion has halted that momentum, forcing the Cowboys to adjust their defensive schemes without one of their most dynamic playmakers.

Adding to the drama is the Cowboys’ unprecedented schedule, which has tested their depth and resilience like never before. Thursday’s game against the Commanders marks Dallas’ fourth Thursday appearance this season—an NFL record. They’ve already played on Thanksgiving, opened the year with a Thursday night thriller against the Philadelphia Eagles, and faced the Detroit Lions on December 4 post-Thanksgiving. Throw in two Monday night games, and it’s clear the Cowboys have been hit with one of the league’s most demanding slates.

Schottenheimer acknowledged the uniqueness of the situation but refused to use it as an excuse. “Well, I mean, the fact that we’re the first team to ever play four is certainly unique. It’s never happened before, so that’s interesting,” he noted. “We know how to process it, we know the right way to game plan, and kind of how to do that. We know how to practice and be smart with their bodies.” Still, he admitted the toll it’s taking: “I mean, these guys are not ready to run. They’re hurting right now. I watched the film three or four times, and we played physical yesterday, we did. We didn’t play great in a lot of areas, but we did play physical, so our guys are sore and they’re banged up, but we’ll get them back.”

Yet, according to The Athletic’s Zach Berman, Philadelphia is flipping the script. The Eagles will roll out their starters in this high-stakes clash, defying Sirianni’s past trends and setting the stage for one of the week’s most electrifying matchups.

“You go through a lot of different processes, and you do what you think is best for your football team,” Sirianni explained. “We think playing our guys is best for the football team.”

Given that the NFC South winner (either the Carolina Panthers or Tampa Bay Buccaneers) is assured a worse record, the Eagles’ playoff berth feels ironclad. In years past, that security has prompted Sirianni to bench his big names. Not this time.

The Bills matchup changes everything. As a legit AFC juggernaut—and a potential Super Bowl foe if the Eagles advance that far—a victory in Buffalo could be the momentum-builder Philadelphia needs after a rollercoaster season. It’s a chance to make a bold statement, boost confidence, and prove they’re peaking at the right moment.

“I think anytime you step onto the football field, there’s an opportunity to get better,” Sirianni told Berman. “I don’t care who you’re playing, what their record is. But you know, I think it’s a huge deal every time you get up, go to the game, any time you’re in practice, meetings, etc. So this is an opportunity for us. This is a week that we have to get better. Next week we have to get better. So we’re trying to play our best football by the end of the season.”

It also meant that some players were going to be dangled on the trade market to get some draft capital in return, including those who had recently received contract extensions, like Kyle Dugger and Anfernee Jennings.

Dugger was eventually traded to the Steelers, and Jennings remained on the trade market until the October deadline, which he was very aware of. Because it was apparent that they wanted to move on from him, it could have been a crutch for Jennings to lean on, not to play hard or show up for his teammates.

That hasn’t been the case, and he did more than he was asked to do last week against the Ravens, and that might have been enough to earn a new contract for, at the very least, the 2026 season.

Anfernee Jennings has the chance to impress the coaches that tried to trade him this season

In a game that was absolutely disastrous on the injury front, as they were already down Milton Williams and then lost Joshua Farmer and Khyiris Tonga, Jennings was called upon to step up on the defensive line and help fill in the gaps to slow down the explosive Ravens’ offense.

He not only excelled at a position he doesn’t play, but he also came through with a sack on QB Tyler Huntley to force a 3rd-and-18, which eventually led to a punt. It impressed Vrabel enough to mention Jennings’ performance after the game.

“We lost a lot of defensive linemen. To have a guy like Anfernee Jennings – [I give him] a lot of credit going in there and playing defensive line and helping us out. I appreciate what he did and everybody else that was able to step in.”

Being casually name-dropped by the head coach is certainly a sign that Jennings made a positive impact on his team, and it will be a moment Vrabel remembers come the offseason.

Jennings has shown he is willing to do what it takes to help his team win, and he said as much to reporters after the game. He hasn’t let the consistent trade rumors distract him from the task at hand, and that could go a long way when it comes time for free agency.

“I always have the next man up mentality. We’re working our ass off in practice, so I gained the confidence in practice to go out in the game and execute. Wherever they put me, that’s my job. I don’t take that lightly, so I was ready to go.”

Although he’s signed through the 2026 season, Vrabel and Co. have made it clear they weren’t exactly thrilled to have Jennings on the team this year, given how hard they tried to trade him. But if he can continue to exhibit the traits of what the head coach wants on his team, there’s no reason he can’t remain on the roster next year.

Culture is important, and wanting to be a New England Patriot is near the top of the list for Vrabel. Jennings has shown he fits that to a T, so he has a good opportunity to further solidify his spot on the team next year over the next few weeks.

The Chiefs, perennial contenders in the AFC West, can’t afford to enter the new season without a reliable Plan B. Current backup Chris Oladokun has shown flashes but lacks the proven pedigree to inspire confidence in a high-stakes environment. Enter Tua Tagovailoa, the left-handed gunslinger who once led the NFL in passing yards in 2023 and earned a Pro Bowl nod. Tagovailoa’s situation in Miami has grown tenuous after he was benched following a lackluster Week 15 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2025. The Dolphins’ decision has fueled speculation about his future, with trade rumors swirling amid questions about his consistency and durability. However, Tagovailoa’s contract— a massive five-year, $212.4 million extension signed in 2024—complicates any potential move.

A key clause in his deal was triggered in March 2025, guaranteeing his entire $54 million salary for 2026 and making it injury-protected. This leaves the Dolphins on the hook financially, but it also opens the door for a trade as a way to offload the commitment. According to Spotrac, a post-June 1 trade would be the most palatable for Miami, splitting the dead cap hit into $13.4 million in 2026 and $31.8 million in 2027, while freeing up $43 million in cap space for 2026.

For the Chiefs, acquiring Tagovailoa could serve as an ideal bridge while Mahomes rehabilitates. Tagovailoa’s quick-release style and accuracy in short-to-intermediate routes align well with Andy Reid’s offensive scheme, which has thrived on precision passing. He wouldn’t be asked to replicate Mahomes’ heroics but could keep the team afloat, potentially starting the first few games of 2026 if needed. At 27 years old, Tagovailoa still has upside, and his experience leading a playoff-caliber team makes him a far cry from a typical backup.

Of course, the deal isn’t without hurdles. The Chiefs would inherit the remainder of Tagovailoa’s contract through 2028, including a 2027 out clause that comes with a hefty $34.8 million dead cap hit if exercised. Kansas City’s cap situation is already tight, with Mahomes’ own megadeal eating up significant space. General manager Brett Veach would need to navigate restructures or other moves to make the numbers work. Still, in a league where quarterback depth can make or break a season, the potential reward might outweigh the risks.
