49ers Are No Joke: “Flying Fortress” Activated, Bringing an Impressive 155 Receptions to Levi’s Stadium

The San Francisco 49ers are making waves in the NFL as they bolster their roster ahead of the new season, addressing a critical need at wide receiver with a familiar face. After trimming their roster from 90 to 53 players last week, the 49ers found themselves thin at the position, with rookie Jacob Cowing sidelined on injured reserve and star Brandon Aiyuk placed on the reserve/PUP list. However, the team is not sitting idle. In a bold move, San Francisco has activated their “Flying Fortress,” extending an official contract offer to veteran wide receiver Kendrick Bourne, a former 49er who could bring his impressive track record of 155 receptions from his recent stint with the New England Patriots back to Levi’s Stadium.

Bourne, now 30, is no stranger to the 49ers’ system. Originally signing with the team as an undrafted free agent in 2017 after a standout college career at Eastern Washington, where he earned All-Big Sky honors twice and All-American recognition once, Bourne quickly proved his worth. Over four seasons with San Francisco, he hauled in 137 passes for 1,769 yards and 11 touchdowns in just 13 games, showcasing his reliability and playmaking ability. His departure to the New England Patriots in 2021 saw him elevate his game further, amassing 155 receptions for 1,945 yards and 11 touchdowns across 53 games over the last four years. Bourne’s unexpected release from New England last week, despite making their initial 53-man roster, opened the door for a potential homecoming.

On Monday, the 49ers hosted Bourne for a meeting, signaling their intent to bolster their receiving corps with a proven veteran while Aiyuk and Cowing recover. According to NBC Sports’ Matt Maiocco, San Francisco made an official contract offer to Bourne, who left the Bay Area on Tuesday to meet with the Washington Commanders. While the 49ers’ offer remains unconfirmed in its status, Bourne is clearly weighing his options. The prospect of joining Washington as a third receiver behind Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel in an offense led by rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels may be tempting. However, the familiarity of San Francisco’s system, the chance to catch passes from rising star Brock Purdy, and the opportunity to contribute to a contending team could tip the scales in the 49ers’ favor.

The 49ers have already taken steps to shore up their depth, bringing back Russell Gage Jr. to the 53-man roster and signing a group of wideouts to their practice squad. Yet, Bourne’s potential return would be a game-changer. His veteran presence, combined with his proven production—292 receptions, 3,714 yards, and 22 touchdowns across his NFL career—would provide a significant boost to an offense looking to maintain its explosive edge. Head coach Kyle Shanahan’s system thrives on versatile playmakers, and Bourne’s ability to run crisp routes and make contested catches makes him a perfect fit.

As Bourne considers his next move, the NFL world watches closely. Will he return to Levi’s Stadium to don the red and gold once more, fortifying the 49ers’ aerial attack? Or will Washington’s offer and the allure of a fresh start sway him? If San Francisco secures Bourne’s signature, their “Flying Fortress” will be fully activated, adding a dynamic weapon to an already formidable roster. One thing is certain: the 49ers are no joke, and their pursuit of Bourne signals their determination to compete at the highest level in 2025.
