Patriots’ Ruthless Plan: Kendrick Bourne OUT in 2025 – No Room for Sentiment!

The New England Patriots are facing a tough decision at the wide receiver position as they approach the 2025 roster cuts, and it appears that veteran Kendrick Bourne may be the odd man out. With a surplus of talent in the receiver room and only a limited number of roster spots available, the Patriots are poised to make a ruthless move, prioritizing potential over sentimentality. According to a recent projection from MassLive’s Mark Daniels, Bourne, a well-liked locker room presence, could be the one to lose his spot on the 53-man roster.

A Crowded Receiver Room

The Patriots’ wide receiver group is deep, but the talent level is up for debate. Stefon Diggs, the team’s marquee acquisition, could be seen as a true No. 1 receiver, though some argue he’s lost a step and is now a middling WR2. Rookie Kyle Williams, a third-round pick, has shown flashes of brilliance, but his draft position raises questions about his immediate impact. Meanwhile, second-year players Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker have impressed in training camp, though their long-term potential remains uncertain. Add in free-agent signee Mack Hollins, slot receiver Pop Douglas, and the emerging Kayshon Boutte, and the Patriots have a logjam at the position.

Daniels projects that the Patriots will carry seven receivers on their 2025 roster, a hefty number for any NFL team. The locks appear to be Diggs, Williams, Hollins, and Douglas, with Boutte making a strong case by working with the first-team unit. That leaves Polk, Baker, and Bourne fighting for the final spots, and according to Daniels, the upside of the younger players could edge out Bourne.

Why Bourne Could Be Cut

Kendrick Bourne’s tenure with the Patriots has been marked by flashes of excellence and a positive locker room presence, but his role in 2025 is far from secure. Bourne suffered a torn ACL in Week 8 of the 2023 season, yet he returned in October 2024 to post a respectable 28 catches for 305 yards in 12 games. However, his $7.7 million cap hit in 2025, combined with a $2.8 million dead cap hit if waived, makes him a potential candidate for release or trade.

Daniels notes that Bourne has been working primarily with the second team during training camp, which could signal that the Patriots are prioritizing evaluations of younger players like Boutte, Polk, and Williams. In his analysis, Daniels wrote: “The Patriots have too many receivers on this 90-man roster. They might only keep six. In this exercise, Polk and Baker make it due to their potential. Bourne is a great locker room presence and a tough cut, but he’s been mostly working with the second team this summer.”

Bourne’s Value to the Patriots

Despite his uncertain roster status, Bourne has a history of production and chemistry with the Patriots’ coaching staff. His best season came in 2021 under offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, when he recorded 55 catches for 800 yards and five touchdowns. This connection could work in Bourne’s favor, as McDaniels values his versatility and reliability. However, with the team focusing on developing younger talent, Bourne’s experience may not be enough to secure his spot.

Adding to the challenge, Bourne suffered a minor setback during a recent scrimmage. ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported that head coach Mike Vrabel said Bourne was “rolled up on” during a Friday scrimmage and is unlikely to practice this week. This injury, while not expected to be long-term, limits Bourne’s ability to prove his worth in the critical weeks leading up to roster cuts.

The Business of Football

The Patriots’ potential decision to cut Bourne underscores the harsh realities of the NFL, where sentimentality often takes a backseat to strategic roster-building. While Bourne’s leadership and past contributions are undeniable, the team’s depth at receiver and the emergence of younger players like Polk, Baker, and Boutte make him expendable. The Patriots could also explore trading Bourne to recoup some value, given his experience and proven ability when healthy.

As the roster cutdown deadline approaches in just four weeks, the Patriots face a delicate balancing act. Do they keep a reliable veteran like Bourne, who brings stability and chemistry with the coaching staff? Or do they bet on the upside of their younger receivers, hoping to build a dynamic offense for the future? For now, it seems the scales are tipping against Bourne, signaling that the Patriots are ready to move forward without him in 2025.
