Jamie Jewitt sparks controversy with candid remarks about his true feelings when he first became a father

Jamie Jewitt, the 34-year-old Love Island star, has ignited a heated discussion with his raw and honest reflections on fatherhood. Known for finding love with Camilla Thurlow on the ITV2 dating show in 2017, Jamie has since built a life with her, marrying in 2021 and welcoming three children: Nell (4), Nora (2), and nine-month-old Brodie. In a recent Substack post, Jamie peeled back the curtain on his journey as a father, challenging the romanticized narrative of instant parental love and revealing a truth that many dads quietly share but rarely voice.

Reflecting on the birth of his first daughter, Nell, in 2020, Jamie described a moment far removed from the Hollywood-scripted ideal. “You’re standing in a room that smells like bleach and adrenaline, watching the love of your life go through something you can barely comprehend,” he wrote. “And then someone hands you this tiny, wrinkled, screaming creature, and your first thought is: ‘Oh… so this is it?’” His candid admission—that he felt no immediate tidal wave of love—has sparked both praise and controversy for its unflinching honesty.

Jamie argues that society sets unrealistic expectations for new fathers, perpetuating a “dangerous, damaging, and ironically well-intentioned lie” that they should feel an instant, overwhelming bond with their newborn, just as mothers often do. He points out the biological disparity: mothers, who carry their babies for nine months, undergo hormonal and physical transformations that prepare them for motherhood. Fathers, on the other hand, are often still grappling with the reality of impending parenthood. “The expectation is that we’re both supposed to experience that first moment exactly the same,” he wrote. “Spoiler alert: we don’t.”

The reality star revealed that he’s far from alone in this experience. “I didn’t feel anything… at least not at first,” he shared, noting that many fathers confess similar feelings in hushed tones, as if admitting a shameful flaw. “They say it like it’s a confession. Like they’re broken, or deficient, or cold.” Jamie’s words resonate with a truth rarely acknowledged: for many dads, the bond with their child isn’t instantaneous—it’s a slow burn, built through the everyday acts of caregiving.

In his post, Jamie beautifully captures how love grows through the small, messy moments of fatherhood. “It’s in the late-night bottle feeds, the burp that hits your chest like a warm milk bomb, the moment your baby recognizes your face and cracks their first real smile,” he wrote. “It’s not love at first sight. It’s a love that builds with effort, sacrifice, presence.” For Jamie, the connection with his children solidified over weeks of showing up, battling self-doubt, and silencing the internal monologue that questioned his readiness.

His journey to fatherhood hasn’t been without its challenges. Jamie has also been open about his struggles with pain, anxiety, and depression, once breaking down in tears by the side of the road. Yet, it’s his commitment to his children that drives him to be the best dad he can be—not out of obligation, but out of a deep, hard-earned love. “When I look at any of my children bleary-eyed, heart full, I realize I would do anything for them,” he shared.

By sharing his story, Jamie hopes to lift the pressure off new fathers who may feel inadequate for not experiencing that fabled “Hollywood moment.” “If you’re a new dad and you’re not feeling it yet, relax,” he advised. “There’s nothing wrong with you. You’re not broken. You’re not cold. You’re just not done. Give it time. Show up. Keep showing up. Because when that connection does hit, it won’t be because the world told you to feel it. It’ll be because you built it.”

Jamie’s words have struck a chord, sparking conversations about the realities of fatherhood and challenging societal expectations. While some applaud his vulnerability, others debate whether his honesty risks undermining the joy of parenthood. One thing is certain: Jamie Jewitt’s candid reflections have opened the door to a more honest dialogue about what it truly means to become a father.
