The Boston Red Sox are coming off a disappointing 2025 season, finishing third in the AL East with an 89-73 record after falling to the New York Yankees in the AL Wild Card. As the offseason unfolds, speculation is swirling about the team’s next moves to bolster their roster for 2026. One shocking rumor has emerged: the Red Sox might be considering trading their dynamic outfielder, Jarren Duran. This potential move has left fans and analysts puzzled, with MLB insider Jim Bowden questioning the logic behind it.

In his latest column, Bowden expressed confusion over why the Red Sox would entertain offers for Duran, a versatile and productive player who has been a cornerstone of their outfield. He suggests that the only explanation might be Boston’s vision for a different outfield alignment in the future. “I’m not sure I understand why the Red Sox keep listening to offers for Duran, outside of the fact they envision their future outfield as Wilyer Abreu in right field, Ceddanne Rafaela in center field, and Roman Anthony in left,” Bowden wrote.
Bowden proposed alternative solutions, such as utilizing Duran as a designated hitter (DH) or rotating him alongside Abreu, Rafaela, and Anthony between the outfield and DH roles. “Why not keep Duran for DH? Or, better yet, why not let all four outfielders rotate between the outfield and DH?” he questioned. Despite these options, Bowden noted that Duran’s name continues to surface in trade rumors, signaling that Boston may be ready to part ways with him this winter. “Regardless, Duran’s name keeps coming up in trade rumors, and it now sounds like the Red Sox will move on from him this winter,” he added.
Duran’s performance over the past two seasons makes the idea of trading him even more perplexing. In 2025, he posted a .256/.332/.442 slash line, hit 16 home runs, drove in 84 RBIs, and led the league in triples for the second straight year, finishing with a 4.6 bWAR. His 2024 season was even more impressive, with a .284/.342/.492 slash line, a league-leading 48 doubles, 14 triples, 21 homers, 34 stolen bases, and an 8.7 bWAR.
With his speed, power, and defensive versatility, Duran is a highly coveted asset. Bowden highlighted that several contending teams would “love to land him,” including the Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers, Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Guardians, and Texas Rangers. Adding to his appeal is his contract, which keeps him under team control through the 2028 season. Any trade involving Duran would likely require a substantial return, as Bowden noted, “It would take a huge haul for the Red Sox to move him.”
The Red Sox are no strangers to blockbuster deals, but trading Duran could be a head-scratcher for fans. His combination of speed, power, and defensive prowess makes him a rare talent, and his departure would leave a significant hole in Boston’s lineup. While the team may be looking to shake things up after another postseason miss, moving a player of Duran’s caliber could signal a larger roster overhaul.
As the offseason progresses, all eyes will be on Boston’s front office to see if they follow through on these rumors or opt to retain Duran as a key piece of their 2026 roster. For now, the idea of trading him has sparked debate and left Red Sox Nation wondering what’s next for their team.
