Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner didn’t hold back when asked about Minnesota Vikings second-year signal-caller J.J. McCarthy on The Rich Eisen Show Wednesday, delivering a blunt but constructive assessment of the young QB’s game.
Warner separated the league’s quarterbacks into two distinct categories: the rare “natural throwers” who can simply pick up a ball and make it sing — think Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes — and everyone else who has to grind to reach elite accuracy and feel.
“J.J. falls into that second group,” Warner said. “I don’t see him as a natural, fluid thrower. You see accuracy issues because of it. At Michigan everything came out as a fastball — hit or miss. That’s the area he’s got to get a lot better at.”
The two-time MVP then turned his attention to the mental side of the position, and his concerns were even sharper.
“What I’m seeing on tape is J.J. hanging on routes way too long,” Warner continued. “By the time he gets to his second or third read, he either can’t see it or he’s late. So the big question is: Is he slow processing? Or is the system forcing him to stare down No. 1 until the route hits the top before he can move on? Either way, it’s causing him to go through progressions slowly — and in the NFL, that gets you in trouble fast.”
Meanwhile, McCarthy’s availability for Sunday’s Week 13 showdown against the Seattle Seahawks remains up in the air. The 2024 first-round pick is still in concussion protocol after taking a shot late in the Vikings’ win over the Cardinals.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell offered cautious optimism Wednesday, noting McCarthy was cleared for limited practice but stressed the final call will rest with the medical staff.
“We’re talking about his head,” O’Connell said. “We’re going to be smart — both for the team and, most importantly, for J.J.”
As Minnesota fights to stay in the NFC playoff race, the franchise now has a Hall of Famer’s roadmap for its quarterback of the future: clean up the mechanical flaws, speed up the eyes and the mind, or risk being exposed at the next level.
