BREAKING: Chiefs Add 6’7 Rookie Offensive Tackle After Bad Injury Update

The Kansas City Chiefs, clinging to their playoff aspirations amid a challenging season, have made a key roster move to bolster their offensive line following a significant injury setback. On Wednesday, the team announced the signing of undrafted free agent rookie offensive tackle Esa Pole to the active 53-man roster. The 6’7″, 319-pound lineman from Washington State University steps up after the Chiefs placed fellow tackle Josh Simmons on the injured reserve list due to a fractured wrist sustained during their Thanksgiving loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

This development comes at a critical juncture for the Chiefs, who face a must-win scenario against the Houston Texans on Sunday to keep their postseason hopes alive. A loss would leave them hanging by the slimmest of margins in the competitive AFC standings.

Injury Forces Chiefs’ Hand

Simmons’ injury, confirmed mid-week, has compounded the frustrations from the Cowboys defeat. The offensive tackle, who had been a rotational piece on the line, fractured his wrist just six days ago, sidelining him for an extended period. In response, Kansas City elevated Pole, who originally signed with the team in May after going undrafted out of college.

Pole’s journey to the Chiefs’ active roster has been a winding one. After impressing in training camp, he was released during final cuts in late August. He was briefly claimed off waivers by the New York Jets but was cut a couple of months later, eventually landing on Kansas City’s practice squad. His promotion signals the team’s confidence in his potential, though he’s not expected to immediately slot into a starting role.

Additional Depth: Matt Waletzko Joins Practice Squad

To further shore up their options, the Chiefs also signed offensive tackle Matt Waletzko to the practice squad. Waletzko, a former Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings player, brings valuable NFL experience with 11 games under his belt. News of his addition surfaced earlier via The Athletic’s Jesse Newell, who noted Waletzko’s presence in the Chiefs’ locker room wearing No. 73. Newell speculated that Waletzko would fill the practice squad vacancy left by Pole’s elevation.

The official announcement came via the Chiefs’ X account: “We have signed Practice Squad player T Esa Pole to an active roster contract. We have placed T Josh Simmons on Reserve/Injured. We have signed T Matt Waletzko to the Practice Squad.”

Impact on the Offensive Line

With Simmons out, the Chiefs are turning to Jaylon Moore to fill the void. Moore has performed admirably when called upon this season, earning a 65.7 grade from Pro Football Focus. However, broader concerns loom over the line, particularly with starting right tackle Jawaan Taylor nursing a triceps injury. Taylor missed Wednesday’s practice and is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game. If he’s unable to suit up, third-round pick Wanya Morris could step in as the next man up.

Pole, despite his rookie status, offers intriguing upside with his massive frame and athleticism honed at Washington State. While he’s unlikely to start barring further injuries, his elevation provides much-needed depth. Waletzko, with his pro experience, could be a game-day call-up if needed, potentially leapfrogging Pole in certain scenarios due to his familiarity with NFL schemes.

Looking Ahead

As the Chiefs prepare for the Texans, this roster shuffle underscores the fragility of their offensive front amid a season fraught with ups and downs. Head coach Andy Reid and the staff will hope these additions stabilize the unit, protecting quarterback Patrick Mahomes and fueling a late-season push. Fans will be watching closely to see if Pole or Waletzko makes an on-field impact sooner rather than later.
