Traeshon Holden isn’t just underrated—he’s the Cowboys’ biggest draft surprise, and the proof is coming soon

The Dallas Cowboys may have struck gold with Traeshon Holden, an undrafted free agent who’s poised to become one of the NFL’s most electrifying rookies in 2025. With new head coach Brian Schottenheimer and quarterback Dak Prescott leading the charge, Holden could be the dynamic offensive weapon Dallas didn’t see coming. While CeeDee Lamb and newly acquired George Pickens are locked in as starters, Holden’s blend of size, skill, and sheer determination makes him a serious contender to shake up the Cowboys’ receiver room and carve out a significant role.

A Familiar Face in a New Place

Holden’s journey to Dallas feels like a homecoming. The 6-3, 220-pound receiver reunites with his former Oregon position coach, Junior Adams, now the Cowboys’ wide receivers coach, and Ducks teammate Ajani Cornelius, a 2025 seventh-round pick (No. 204 overall). This familiarity gives Holden a head start as he fights for a spot on the 53-man roster. “I’m very excited,” Holden told DallasCowboys.com’s Tommy Yarrish. “He [Adams] told me if he got a chance to come get me, he was coming to get me. He knows he got a dawg, and I’m ready to make it happen.” With Adams in his corner, Holden has a mentor who knows exactly how to unlock his potential.

A Chip on His Shoulder

Going undrafted lit a fire under Holden. “I was hurt,” he admitted, reflecting on the draft snub. “That 24-hour rule, I was hurting. But now, I’m here, and I’m ready to make it happen. I’ll do what I can to show everybody that I belong. … Prove everybody wrong. Everybody. I’m coming for heads. That’s it.” This mental edge, fueled by a desire to silence doubters, could be what sets Holden apart in a crowded receiver group that includes Lamb, Pickens, KaVontae Turpin, and Jalen Tolbert.

A Proven Playmaker

Holden’s college career showcases his potential to be a game-changer. After two seasons at Alabama, where he recorded 46 catches for 570 yards and seven touchdowns, he transferred to Oregon in 2023 and became a key piece of the Ducks’ passing attack. Under coach Dan Lanning, Holden racked up 82 receptions for 1,170 yards and 11 touchdowns over two seasons, earning Honorable Mention All-Big Ten honors in 2024. His explosive route-running, reliable hands, and exceptional body control made him a favorite target for quarterbacks Bo Nix and Dillon Gabriel.

Holden’s versatility extends beyond catching passes. He was a standout run blocker at Oregon, a skill that could endear him to Schottenheimer’s staff as they look to balance the Cowboys’ offensive attack. His physicality and willingness to do the dirty work make him a well-rounded threat.

Measurables and Momentum

At the NFL Draft Combine, Holden posted solid numbers: a 4.57-second 40-yard dash, a 1.54-second 10-yard split, a 10-foot-3-inch broad jump, and a 32-inch vertical. While not jaw-dropping, these metrics underscore his athleticism for a player of his size. More importantly, Holden’s on-field performance speaks louder than his combine stats. Oregon quarterback and Heisman Trophy finalist Dillon Gabriel raved about Holden’s work ethic and resilience after a 149-yard, six-catch performance in a 38-17 rout of Michigan. “Just proud of him, the way he worked,” Gabriel said. “He’s gone through adversity, but I just love the way he responds. He’s a damn good kid and works his butt off.”

That adversity included a moment of controversy when Holden was ejected from Oregon’s win over Ohio State for spitting on an opposing player, leading to a one-game suspension. However, Gabriel emphasized Holden’s growth: “I f****** love it for him, I do. I want people to know that there’s before and after. There’s growth. He’s a direct example of that.” This maturity could be key as Holden navigates the high-pressure environment of the NFL.

Ready to Shine in Oxnard

As the Cowboys head to training camp in Oxnard, California, on July 21, Holden has a golden opportunity to prove he belongs. Competing at Staybridge Suites alongside veterans and rookies, he’ll be vying for reps in a pivotal position group for Dallas. With Lamb and Pickens drawing defensive attention, Holden’s size, speed, and hunger could make him a matchup nightmare and a dark-horse candidate to steal snaps.

The Cowboys’ offense, led by Prescott and guided by Schottenheimer’s vision, is primed for an explosive 2025. If Holden continues to channel his draft snub into on-field production, he could be the surprise weapon that elevates Dallas to new heights.
