Jason Pinnock reveals ‘shocking’ reason behind decision to join 49ers –, ‘ball-hawk’ plans for 2025

In an exclusive interview with NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco on “49ers Talk,” newly signed San Francisco 49ers safety Jason Pinnock shared the surprising motivations behind his decision to join the team during the 2025 NFL offseason. Pinnock, who inked a one-year free-agent contract, opened up about his excitement for the upcoming season, his reunion with defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, and his bold ambitions to establish himself as a “ball-hawk” and All-Pro caliber player.

A Culture of Winning Draws Pinnock to San Francisco

Pinnock, who spent his first four NFL seasons with the New York Jets (2021) and New York Giants (2022-24), expressed that joining the 49ers was a confirmation of his belief in the importance of a winning culture. “It’s a culture,” Pinnock told Maiocco. “I’m blessed to be in one, and I’m soaking it all up.” The opportunity to play for a franchise renowned for its competitive spirit and storied history was a significant factor in his decision to sign with San Francisco.

Reuniting with Robert Saleh: A Familiar System

One of the most compelling reasons for Pinnock’s move to the 49ers was the chance to reunite with Robert Saleh, the coach who drafted him 175th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft when Saleh was with the Jets. Pinnock’s familiarity with Saleh’s defensive system and their established relationship made the transition an appealing one. “I wanted to go somewhere comfortable, man,” Pinnock explained. “I’m comfortable in this system. I just wanted some continuity. [I have a] great relationship with Saleh – knew his system, loved his system, and I wanted to get back.”

Pinnock’s journey under Saleh has been transformative. Originally a cornerback at the University of Pittsburgh, Pinnock transitioned to safety under Saleh’s guidance during his rookie year with the Jets. This positional switch proved pivotal, as Pinnock went on to start for the Giants over the past two seasons, amassing 211 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and two interceptions. These stats underscore the wisdom of Saleh’s decision to reposition him, setting the stage for Pinnock’s growth into a versatile defensive back.

A Humbling Journey: From Jets Cut to Giants Standout

Pinnock’s path to the 49ers was not without its challenges. In August 2022, he was released by Saleh and the Jets, a moment he described as “humbling.” However, Pinnock views this setback as a “blessing in disguise.” Joining the Giants, he thrived under defensive coordinators Don “Wink” Martindale and Shane Bowen. Martindale’s system helped Pinnock discover his blitzing ability, while Bowen’s approach sharpened his skills in diagnosing coverages. “I don’t think I would’ve fell into a system like with Martindale, where I figured out like, ‘Wow, I can blitz,’” Pinnock reflected. “And then finding Bowen, knowing, ‘OK, I can diagnose and see coverages and be able to observe.’ It was tough, man, but it was a blessing in disguise.”

Pinnock’s ‘Ball-Hawk’ Ambitions for 2025

Looking ahead to the 2025 season, Pinnock is determined to showcase his full range of skills, particularly his ability to create turnovers. “Getting the ball,” he emphasized to Maiocco. “I think I’ve shown I can pressure, I can tackle, good in space; I got to go show these attributes in my ball skills – you know, something that got me drafted, basically. Show people I’m a ball-hawk.”

Pinnock’s goals extend beyond simply contributing. He has his sights set on earning a starting role and making a significant impact. “Hopefully, I’m a Day 1 starter,” he told Maiocco. “I look at myself as an All-Pro-type of guy. That’s what I came here to do. That’s what I came to show the league.” His confidence and ambition signal his intent to make a lasting impression with the 49ers.

A New Chapter in San Francisco

As Pinnock embarks on this new chapter with the 49ers, his combination of experience, versatility, and hunger to prove himself positions him as a key addition to San Francisco’s defense. With Saleh’s familiar system as his foundation and a clear vision for the 2025 season, Pinnock is poised to make waves as a “ball-hawk” and potentially elevate the 49ers’ secondary to new heights.
