The San Francisco 49ers are facing an early setback as training camp kicks off, with starting left guard Ben Bartch sidelined due to a quad injury sustained in a surprising weightlifting accident shortly after minicamp concluded. The team placed Bartch on the Non-Football Injury List on Friday, raising concerns about his availability and the competition for the left guard position.
General Manager John Lynch confirmed the nature of the injury, stating, “He hurt himself working out away from here. He’s one of those guys, not going to put a timeline, but relatively soon should be coming back.” While Lynch remains optimistic about Bartch’s recovery, the injury adds to the offensive lineman’s history of health struggles in the NFL, casting doubt on his ability to secure the starting role.
With Aaron Banks, the previous starting left guard, signing with the Green Bay Packers this offseason, the 49ers were already navigating a transition at the position. Head Coach Kyle Shanahan addressed Bartch’s status in the competition, saying, “No,” when asked if Bartch remains the favorite to start. “But he is right there competing with guys, you know, him and Nick Zakelj. We all know Spencer Burford can do that. He’s done it before. We’re starting him out working to try to get that swing tackle spot. We also know he can hop right in at guard and play because he started there for us in our ‘23 season with Jon Feliciano.”
The competition for the left guard spot is now wide open, with Nick Zakelj emerging as a strong contender. Last season, rookie Dominick Puni seized the starting right guard role during training camp when both Burford and Jon Feliciano were injured, holding onto the position even after their recovery due to his stellar performance. Zakelj now has a similar opportunity to claim the left guard role, especially with Bartch’s return timeline uncertain.
Shanahan emphasized the importance of training camp in determining the starter, noting, “We had Bartch and Zakelj competing through OTAs, but like I’ll say since 2018, probably ‘19, what is OTAs when it comes to O-Linemen and stuff. You know, we have to actually go out there and do more football.” Until Bartch returns, Zakelj faces little competition, giving him a chance to solidify his case to start alongside left tackle Trent Williams in the 49ers’ season opener.
Bartch’s injury history and this latest setback could open the door for Zakelj to take the reins, much like Puni did last year. As the 49ers gear up for the season, all eyes will be on the offensive line to see who steps up in this critical competition.
