A $3.75M deal turns into a NIGHTMARE as Cowboys’ defender suffers career-threatening neck break!

OXNARD, Calif. – The Dallas Cowboys’ training camp took a grim turn on Sunday as veteran guard Rob Jones suffered a devastating neck injury during the team’s first padded practice, casting a shadow over his $3.75 million free-agent signing.

Jones, who inked a one-year deal in March to bolster the Cowboys’ offensive line with his 30 career starts, including all 17 games for the Miami Dolphins last season, sustained a broken bone in his neck. The injury occurred early in Sunday’s practice, though Jones remarkably continued through the session and even took extra reps alongside rookie guard Tyler Booker.

“It happened right at the first,” Jones said, now donning a neck brace. “They’re saying it’ll be about 2-3 months.” However, the severity of the injury—a broken bone in the neck—raises concerns about whether Jones will return to form or face a longer, potentially career-altering recovery.

The Cowboys signed Jones to provide immediate experience and depth at right guard, especially as a contingency plan following the retirement of Zack Martin. The move was intended to stabilize the offensive line before the NFL Draft, where Dallas later selected Tyler Booker with the No. 12 overall pick. Booker has since emerged as the projected starter at right guard, though Jones had been competing for first-team reps during the initial week of camp.

With Jones sidelined for an estimated 2-3 months, the Cowboys are fortunate to have depth at the guard position. Saahdiq Charles, with 18 career starts, and Brock Hoffman, who has nine starts at both guard and center, provide experienced options. T.J. Bass, with five career starts, also adds versatility to the lineup. This depth will be critical as the team navigates Jones’ absence during the preseason and potentially into the regular season.

The injury is a significant setback for Jones, whose $3.75 million deal was seen as a low-risk, high-reward move for Dallas. Now, with his recovery timeline uncertain and the specter of a career-threatening injury looming, the Cowboys must rely on their young talent and depth to fill the void. For Jones, the focus shifts to rehabilitation, with hopes of returning to the field and proving his worth to a team that still values his veteran presence.
