A BOLD Declaration From the 49ers’ Camp: Klay Kubiak’s Update on Brock Purdy is a Direct Threat to the Giants.

The San Francisco 49ers are still awaiting an update on injured QB Brock Purdy’s status. Purdy suffered a turf toe injury in Week 1 against the Seahawks and made his return in Week 4 against the Jaguars, only to re-aggravate his injury in the loss. He hasn’t played since, and while the Niners have been reticent to place him on Injured Reserve (IR), his return date is still unclear.

After practice on Thursday, San Francisco offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak spoke to the media and was asked about Purdy’s status for Week 9 against the Giants.

“Brock’s getting better, I know that,” Kubiak said. “You know, it’s good. He’s doing more this week. He’s taking a few more reps, and we’re going to let the week play out and see how it goes.”

That’s a very cryptic answer, and one that doesn’t shed much light on his Purdy will make his much-anticipated return to the field on Sunday. He was listed as a limited participant in Wednesday’s practice, and as of this writing the 49ers have not released Thursday’s practice report.

San Francisco 49ers OC Klint Kubiak on QB Brock Purdy’s Injury Approach and Mentality

“Yeah, it’s very frustrating for him,” Kubiak said on if Purdy was frustrated by his various injury setbacks. “[He] and I were talking yesterday, he’s just — it’s an injury that’s frustrating because [of the] unpredictable nature of it. About when it’s going flare up and kind of how it’s going to react to things.”

“But he’s been doing everything he can do, he’s been patient. But it is frustrating for him, I know he wants to be out there, I know he’s our quarterback and he’s our leader. And he wants to be out on the field with the guys. But he’s doing what he needs to do, he’s being patient, he’s getting better, and we’re getting him back into practice.”

“Oh he’s great,” Kubiak continued, addressing Purdy’s leadership. “It doesn’t affect [his leadership] at all. It’s just, I do imagine personally, it’s just a frustrating situation. But Brock, he’s a pro, he’s a leader and he’s helping our guys however he can.”
