The New York Yankees, once perched atop the American League as a dominant force, are now teetering on the edge of playoff elimination. After another disheartening loss on Sunday, the Yankees cling to a razor-thin lead over the Cleveland Guardians for the final playoff spot. With the season slipping away, all eyes are on manager Aaron Boone, whose job security is under intense scrutiny.
The Yankees’ fall from grace has been nothing short of staggering. A team that began the year as a powerhouse has been plagued by defensive blunders, baserunning gaffes, and a string of injuries that have decimated the roster. Despite the mounting losses, Boone has maintained an almost defiant optimism in public, a stance that has drawn the ire of a frustrated fanbase. Many are now calling for his ouster, with his approval rating among supporters plummeting to an all-time low.

“If the Yankees can’t turn it around, Boone could end up taking the fall,” Ethan Sears wrote for the New York Post, capturing the growing sentiment that the manager’s days may be numbered.
Yet, amid the storm, Boone has found staunch defenders in some of the Yankees’ most revered figures. During the team’s annual “Old-Timers’ Day” celebration on Saturday, Hall of Fame manager Joe Torre offered a vote of confidence. “Boone will get a run out of these guys,” Torre declared, per Sears, signaling his belief in the embattled manager’s ability to rally the squad.
Perhaps the most striking defense came from Boone’s former teammate, legendary catcher Jorge Posada, who delivered a blunt, four-word verdict on Boone’s responsibility for the team’s woes: “It’s not his fault.”
Posada elaborated, pointing to the litany of injuries that have crippled the Yankees’ campaign. “He’s got some guys banged up, not at 100 percent,” Posada said, according to Sears. “So it’s not his fault that some guys are not playing at their potential. … Obviously, they went through a stretch, lost a lot of key guys. Health really matters.”
The injury toll has indeed been brutal. Franchise ace Gerrit Cole was sidelined for the entire season before it even began. Luis Gil only recently returned to the mound, while Clarke Schmidt and Oswaldo Cabrera have been ruled out for the year. Several key relievers are also nursing injuries, and captain Aaron Judge was absent for a significant stretch. These absences have left Boone scrambling to field a competitive lineup night after night.
While Posada’s defense carries weight, it may not be enough to shield Boone from the fallout if the Yankees miss the postseason. Injuries aside, the manager’s decisions—both on the field and in the clubhouse—will face relentless examination. For a franchise with a storied history and sky-high expectations, missing the playoffs could spell the end for Boone’s tenure.
