In the high-stakes world of reality TV, where drama unfolds behind closed doors, one voice stands out as the ultimate truth-teller: Taran Armstrong, the beloved live feed updater for *Big Brother*. With his sharp insights and unwavering dedication, Armstrong is sounding the alarm on why the show’s 24/7 live feeds aren’t just a bonus—they’re an essential safeguard against the polished, edited facade that hits your screen.

“*Big Brother* was born in controversy that has only ever continued to evolve with the show over time. From racist remarks and behaviors to threats of violence, expulsions, attempts at censorship and more,” Armstrong reveals in his freshly released book, *Behind the Mirror*, which dropped on bookshelves Tuesday, November 25. “The live feeds have at least functioned as a safeguard against the worst the genre has to offer.”
Armstrong has carved out a massive following in the *Big Brother* fandom through his daily dispatches as part of the “Rob Has a Podcast” (RHAP) crew. Founded by *Survivor* legend Rob Cesternino, RHAP has become the go-to hub for reality TV enthusiasts, dishing on everything from *Survivor* and *Big Brother* to *The Traitors* and beyond.
While Armstrong champions the live feeds as a vital protector for both contestants and audiences, he admits the show—now pushing three decades strong—still has miles to go. “There’s still plenty of room for improvement,” he notes, highlighting how these unfiltered streams keep the chaos in check amid the game’s relentless evolution.

Die-hard *Big Brother* fans are no strangers to the show’s scandalous saga. In *Behind the Mirror*, Armstrong dives deep into its origins, tracing roots back to the Dutch original before it morphed into the American powerhouse we binge today. He unearths infamous controversies, from aired blow-ups to hidden gems that never saw the light of primetime.
“There’s so much learning that you can do through the show. And one of the things that you can learn is the ways that other reality shows might be lying to you that you don’t even realize,” Armstrong shared exclusively with *Us Weekly* while unpacking his book. He emphasizes what sets *Big Brother* apart: those raw live feeds. “Because if you at least know the events of the feeds, you don’t need to watch them yourself. This is the main thing that a lot of people feel like, ‘Well, I’m not interested in the live feeds at all, because that’s way too much, or it might be boring.’ Most people are not watching the feeds 24/7; most people are consuming the live feeds through social media or podcasts like mine, where they’re getting an update, sort of day to day, almost like you would a sports league.”
Armstrong also spotlights how the game has transformed, crediting trailblazers like Dr. Will Kirby, Dan Gheesling, Taylor Hale, and others for reshaping strategy and spectacle.
Though he knows not every reality TV junkie will geek out over *Big Brother*’s backstory, Armstrong hopes readers unearth gems in his pages. “I’m trying to find a place of acceptance that it will not be for everyone. Some people will come to it, looking for something that’s not there, especially because it’s about reality TV,” he confides. “If you come to this book looking for juicy secrets and details or whatever, or gossip, you know that’s not really what the book was intended to be. So I hope that the people that are able to get something out of it.”
The journey to *Behind the Mirror* kicked off right after Season 24 wrapped in September 2022. Armstrong dove into exhaustive research, combing through the show’s archives and chatting with alumni like Tiffany Mitchell and winner Steve Moses about their wild rides. Shifting from real-time recaps to historical deep dives was a thrill. “When a season is live, it’s very up and down, you know? And the way that I cover a season live, as I mentioned, I’m live every day, and so every day, I’m telling a story of what happened the previous day, while also telling the story,” he explained to *Us*. “Up until this point, I’m every day sort of reevaluating what is the story of the season and when you’re looking back, especially when you’re looking back at a huge swath of history, it’s a lot easier to see the through line for the stories that can be told about it, or at least the ones that I cared about and really loved.”
*Behind the Mirror* is out now, with Armstrong himself narrating the audiobook for that extra layer of authenticity. If you’re ready to peek beyond the edited highlights and discover the real pulse of *Big Brother*, this is your must-read wake-up call.
