BOMBSHELL IN ANFIELD: Liverpool breeze past Tottenham in race for Serie A’s ‘best’ as enticing exit clause revealed

Liverpool have surged ahead of Tottenham Hotspur in the pursuit of Juventus centre-back Gleison Bremer, with fresh reports confirming the Brazilian international could be available for a surprisingly accessible fee this summer.

Bremer has been on Tottenham’s radar since Fabio Paratici’s first spell as sporting director between 2021 and 2023. Spurs have built a reputation for successfully recruiting top Italian talent in recent years, and Bremer remained a high-priority target even after Paratici’s departure to Fiorentina. As recently as December, it was widely reported that the centre-back could kick-start Spurs’ squad overhaul under the new regime.

Yet much has changed at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since then. Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor have both departed, the club has edged perilously close to the relegation zone, and Roberto De Zerbi has now taken the reins. Even if De Zerbi can stabilise the side and preserve Premier League status, attracting an elite defender of Bremer’s calibre will be an uphill task for a club in transition.

According to respected Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb, it is Liverpool — not Tottenham — who now lead the race for the 29-year-old. Growing unease is spreading among Juventus supporters that their defensive colossus could depart at the end of the campaign. While manager Luciano Spalletti considers Bremer “untouchable”, the club hierarchy is reportedly unwilling to resist a “reasonable” offer.

The report reveals that Bremer’s contract — signed in 2024 and running until June 2029 — contains a €54 million (£47m / $63m) release clause. That figure sits comfortably within Liverpool’s financial parameters, especially when Juventus previously valued the player above €70m (£61m / $81m). The situation has become an increasingly “sensitive topic” at the club, with senior figures potentially prepared to sell against the head coach’s wishes.

For Liverpool, the timing could hardly be more opportune. Joe Gomez is expected to move on, while Virgil van Dijk is entering the final phase of his Anfield career. Although speculation persists over Ibrahima Konate’s long-term future, the Frenchman’s most recent comments have pointed strongly towards a contract extension. Adding Bremer would provide Arne Slot with a ready-made, high-quality replacement who combines pace, elite positioning, physical dominance and ball-playing ability — qualities perfectly suited to the demands of Premier League football. Lautaro Martinez has previously described him as the “best defender” in Serie A, underlining the calibre of talent now within Liverpool’s reach.

At 29, Bremer sits slightly above Liverpool’s traditional preference for signing players aged 25 or under, yet his proven excellence at the highest level and immediate impact potential make him an exception worth making. He is equally potent in both penalty areas, offering not just defensive security but also a genuine goal threat from set-pieces.

Liverpool’s defensive shortlist extends beyond Bremer. Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni remains a long-term dream target, although Barcelona are believed to be confident of winning that particular race. Meanwhile, RB Leipzig are showing increasing willingness to sell another Reds target, Castello Lukeba, and Liverpool continue to battle Manchester United and Real Madrid for Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck — whose contract extension now appears uncertain.

In a summer where defensive reinforcements are a clear priority at Anfield, the emergence of Bremer’s €54m release clause represents a significant development. Tottenham’s fading hopes, coupled with Juventus’ potential willingness to deal, have handed Liverpool a genuine opportunity to secure one of Serie A’s standout performers — and potentially the “best defender” on the peninsula — without breaking the bank.

The ball is now firmly in Liverpool’s court.
