Buffalo Bills linebacker Matt Milano, a 2022 first-team All-Pro, suffered a pectoral injury during the first half of the team’s dominant 30–10 victory over the New York Jets on Sunday. Head coach Sean McDermott described Milano as “dinged up,” and the veteran did not return for the second half, raising concerns about his availability for Buffalo’s upcoming Thursday Night Football matchup against the Miami Dolphins.
Milano, who led the Bills in tackles during the first half, showcased his elite defensive skills early in the game. He made the team’s first two tackles, forcing a three-and-out by stopping Jets running back Breece Hall for a 2-yard gain and then tackling for a 3-yard loss on the next play. However, he was held out after halftime, standing on the sideline with his helmet on during the Jets’ opening drive of the third quarter but never re-entering the game. Linebacker Dorian Williams filled in for him.
McDermott provided little clarity on the severity of Milano’s injury post-game, stating, “He was dinged up a little bit here, so we’ve got to see where that goes. I don’t really know much at all at this point, so I’ll get you more information when I can.” On Monday, when asked if Milano’s injury could sideline him for significant time, McDermott remained noncommittal, saying, “Don’t know yet. We’ll see.”
Milano’s injury history adds context to the concern. Since the start of 2023, the 2017 fifth-round pick has missed 25 games, including 12 in 2023 due to a broken leg and 13 in 2024 after a torn biceps suffered in training camp. He returned in Week 13 last season, recording 16 tackles, two fumble recoveries, and one tackle for loss in four games. Milano has also battled a broken fibula (2018), hamstring issues, and previous pectoral injuries during his nine-year career.
Despite these setbacks, Milano appeared to be back in top form this season. In Buffalo’s Week 1 win over the Baltimore Ravens, he notched four tackles and a sack, signaling a strong start. His potential absence could be a significant blow to the Bills’ defense as they prepare for a short-week showdown against Miami at 8:20 p.m. on Thursday.
With Milano’s status uncertain, the Bills will likely lean on Williams and other depth players to fill the void if the Pro Bowl linebacker is unable to play. Fans and analysts await further updates as Buffalo aims to maintain its strong start to the season.
