BREAKING IN ANFIELD! Liverpool target two Ibrahima Konate replacements after bombshell exit reveal

In a major twist at Anfield, Ibrahima Konate has decided to leave Liverpool, with the club now actively exploring options to replace the 27-year-old centre-back.

Contract negotiations between Konate and Liverpool have been ongoing throughout the season. The Reds were keen to tie the Frenchman down to a new deal to prevent him from following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s path and joining Real Madrid on a cut-price €10million (£8.4m) transfer after running down his contract.

Early in the campaign, Konate appeared destined for the exit door, with strong interest from European heavyweights Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. However, positive developments emerged in recent months. Terms were largely agreed by early April, and on April 20, Konate himself stated that the two parties were “close to an agreement.”

Yet, in a significant turn of events, frustrations have mounted in the last few weeks. Liverpool have now accepted that the France international will depart the club for free at the end of the season.

According to well-placed sources, while progress had been made on salary structure and contract length, sticking points over the signing-on fee and agent payments ultimately proved insurmountable. As a result, Arne Slot’s side will head into the next campaign without one of their key defensive figures.

Liverpool turn to familiar and emerging targets

With Konate’s exit confirmed internally, Liverpool have shortlisted two centre-backs as potential replacements.

One intriguing option is the return of former academy product Jarell Quansah. The 23-year-old was sold to Bayer Leverkusen for £35million last July, but Liverpool inserted a buy-back clause worth €80m (£69m) that activates in summer 2027. The Reds remain huge admirers of Quansah’s long-term potential and are closely monitoring his progress in Germany. Bringing him back to Anfield is now under active internal discussion.

Another name on the shortlist is rising Greek talent Konstantinos Koulierakis. The 22-year-old defender, currently at Wolfsburg, has caught the eye of Liverpool’s recruitment team. A transfer has reportedly moved “one step closer” following Wolfsburg’s relegation from the Bundesliga, which could make the player more open to a move to a top-tier club.

Transfermarkt values Koulierakis at €25m (£22m), a figure that falls comfortably within Liverpool’s reach. This is particularly important given the club’s recent spending and upcoming priorities.

Financial prudence amid multiple targets

Liverpool are expected to exercise caution in the market after investing £60m in Jeremy Jacquet. With additional needs for a new right winger, central midfielder, and left-back, FSG must manage their budget carefully. Signing Koulierakis would represent a cost-effective and high-potential solution for the defensive department.

Konate’s departure marks the end of an era for the powerful centre-back, who has been a key part of Liverpool’s defensive setup in recent seasons. His exit, combined with the earlier loss of Trent Alexander-Arnold, represents a significant rebuild challenge for Arne Slot heading into a crucial summer transfer window.

Liverpool fans will now wait with anticipation to see whether the club moves swiftly for Quansah or Koulierakis — or potentially both — as they look to strengthen the heart of their defence.
