The Minnesota Vikings have received a much-needed boost ahead of their Week 14 matchup against the Washington Commanders, with key offensive players JJ McCarthy and Aaron Jones both cleared to play. This positive injury update comes at a critical time for the struggling team, which sits at 4-8 and is desperate to turn their season around.

The Vikings gained some newfound appreciation for their 2024 first-round pick, quarterback JJ McCarthy, after what some argue was the team’s worst offensive performance of all time in Week 13 against the Seattle Seahawks, with backup Max Brosmer at the helm. McCarthy has undoubtedly struggled in his young career, but he’s still recovering from the lingering effects of a meniscus tear suffered in the preseason of his rookie year, which sidelined him for the entire 2024 season. With just six professional starts under his belt, the former Michigan standout is viewed as a long-term project with high potential.
McCarthy sustained a concussion in Week 12 against the Green Bay Packers, forcing him to miss the following game. However, optimism grew for his return as he practiced fully on both Wednesday and Thursday. Two days before kickoff, he was officially removed from the injury report and is set to start on Sunday.
“Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy (concussion) and RB Aaron Jones Sr. (shoulder) are both off the injury report and good to go Sunday,” NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported.
As Pelissero noted, running back Aaron Jones will also be back in action. There was initial concern earlier in the week that Jones might not suit up, after he exited midway through Week 13’s loss to the Seahawks with a shoulder injury. He was limited in practice on Wednesday and Thursday, but like McCarthy, he’s now off the report and ready to resume his role as the lead back in Minnesota’s offense.
How Will This Impact The Vikings’ Offense?
The Vikings, mired at 4-8, need all the help they can get to salvage what’s left of their season and avoid another year of mediocrity. Since head coach Kevin O’Connell arrived in 2022, Minnesota hasn’t managed back-to-back playoff appearances, and that trend seems likely to continue into 2025 and beyond.
Despite his ups and downs, McCarthy remains a player the Vikings are excited about and committed to developing. After watching his backup struggle last weekend, there’s no rush to bench him anytime soon. The run game also gets a significant lift with Jones’ return; he handled around two-thirds of the offensive snaps in Weeks 10-12 before his early exit in Week 13, though it didn’t alter the lopsided result.
Adding to the intrigue, the Commanders will be led by star quarterback Jayden Daniels, who has missed the past four games—and seven total this season—due to an elbow injury. Washington’s offense showed promise in their recent outing against a stout Denver Broncos defense last Sunday night, making it all the more important for the Vikings to keep pace.
With both McCarthy and Jones healthy, Minnesota’s offense could regain some rhythm just in time for this home game in Minneapolis. Fans will be watching closely to see if this duo can spark a late-season turnaround.
