In a season plagued by defensive injuries, the San Francisco 49ers have received a glimmer of hope regarding star linebacker Fred Warner. General Manager John Lynch provided an encouraging update on Warner’s rehabilitation progress during a recent appearance on KNBR radio, highlighting the All-Pro’s relentless work ethic amid a potentially season-ending ankle injury.
Warner, a cornerstone of the 49ers’ defense, suffered a dislocated and fractured right ankle in Week 6 of the 2025 NFL season. The injury was initially expected to sideline him for the remainder of the year, dealing a significant blow to a team already reeling from setbacks, including an early-season injury to edge rusher Nick Bosa. Despite the grim prognosis, whispers of a possible late-season return—particularly if the 49ers embark on a deep playoff run—have circulated among fans and analysts. However, the organization has consistently tempered expectations, emphasizing that any comeback remains a long shot.

In his KNBR interview on December 11, Lynch struck an optimistic tone while keeping things realistic. “Fred’s crushing it,” Lynch said, as reported by 49ers Web Zone. “He’s going to attack everything in his life with the same mentality, which is not waste a minute, focus on what he can control, and that’s working his tail off. I’ve told you all the lengths that Fred goes [through] to be the best he can possibly be. He’s not approaching this any different.”
Lynch specifically pointed to Warner’s innovative rehab approach, including aquatic therapy. “Someone showed it to me, where he’s swimming, so he’s kind of taken on that,” Lynch added. “And I think that’s something Fred always tries to implement—something different. I think, in his approach to this injury, he’s approached it the very same way, and he’s doing really well.”
While Lynch acknowledged the slim chances of Warner returning for the playoffs—such as an NFC Championship Game or Super Bowl appearance—he didn’t rule it out entirely. “Like I said before, it’s a stretch to foresee him coming back [for the playoffs], but I don’t put anything past Fred Warner,” Lynch explained. “Our biggest issue is just going to be making sure—he’ll want to, but it’s just like, is it a wise decision for him, for our organization, all those things? We’ll let that transpire, but what Fred will do is not waste a day in doing everything he can to rehab that injury.”
This update comes at a critical juncture for the 49ers, who are fighting to stay in contention for the NFC West title. Emerging from their bye week, San Francisco is set to host the struggling 2-11 Tennessee Titans in Week 15. The matchup pits the Niners’ depleted defense against rookie quarterback Cam Ward, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Ward’s rookie campaign has been underwhelming, with 2,468 passing yards, nine touchdowns, and seven interceptions on a 59% completion rate. Still, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan isn’t underestimating the young signal-caller. “You can see why he was the first pick,” Shanahan said. “He throws like a top quarterback. He can make every throw, and when his first read is there, he hits it. The talent is obvious.”
A win against the Titans could provide much-needed momentum as the 49ers push for the postseason. With Warner’s potential return looming as a motivational factor—albeit distant—the team is focused on controlling what they can in the immediate term.
For now, Warner’s “crushing it” mentality offers a beacon of positivity in an injury-riddled season. Fans will be watching closely as the linebacker’s rehab progresses, hoping for that improbable comeback story. Stay tuned for more updates as the 49ers navigate the final stretch of the 2025 campaign.
