BREAKING: Liverpool suddenly face major ‘dilemma’ about Antoine Semenyo amid FSG ‘caution’

Liverpool, England – In a stunning twist to the January transfer saga, Liverpool find themselves grappling with a major dilemma over Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo, as Fenway Sports Group (FSG) exercises caution amid the club’s underwhelming season. Sources close to the matter have revealed to TEAMtalk that while the Reds are keen on securing the Ghanaian winger, their owners are hesitant to go all-in, fearing it could exacerbate existing squad issues.

Semenyo, 25, has surged to the top of Liverpool’s wishlist for the winter window, with insiders confirming to TEAMtalk’s transfer correspondent Fraser Fletcher that the defending Premier League champions believe they are “ahead in the race” for his signature. The Bournemouth forward’s preference is reportedly to join Anfield and work under manager Arne Slot, bolstered by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano’s report on November 22 that Liverpool have inquired about the “structure in terms of payment of the release clause.”

That clause stands at £60 million plus £5 million in add-ons (equivalent to up to €73.6 million or $84.9 million), a figure Liverpool are confident they can trigger without straining their finances. However, TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Dean Jones has disclosed that the club remains uncertain about pulling the trigger, citing broader concerns over their recent transfer strategy.

Liverpool’s summer 2025 spending spree, which totaled a staggering £450 million (€396 million, $519 million) on new arrivals, has yet to yield the desired results. Performances have been disappointing, with high-profile signings like Milos Kerkez, Alexander Isak, and Florian Wirtz struggling to meet expectations. This has left the Reds in a precarious position, questioning whether adding another player mid-season would disrupt the squad further or provide the much-needed spark.

The dilemma is particularly acute given Mohamed Salah’s dip in form. The 33-year-old Egyptian icon, once a prolific goalscorer, has managed just four Premier League goals and one in the Champions League this season – a far cry from his peak years. In contrast, Semenyo represents youth and potential, with his upward trajectory making him an attractive option to inject vitality into Liverpool’s attack.

Jones elaborated to TEAMtalk: “Liverpool are definitely thinking about Semenyo. I think it is too soon to say the deal is likely, they have not yet committed to triggering that release clause. There is also an element of caution about their situation. It does present a clear opportunity in the market, yet the belief is that the summer window would be a better time for any potential deal. The problem is that there would be more competition then.

“One of Liverpool’s dilemmas is that their season seems to have been hampered by making so many squad changes. Maybe they made too many signings in the summer. The big spend has not gone well – so should they be adding another one? It’s certainly something to think twice about but, given Salah’s drop off, Semenyo does feel like a player that could give them a new edge. As I say, I am not convinced yet that they will sign him, but certainly they are looking into it.

“If they don’t go for Semenyo, then I think they will leave that situation until the summer. They won’t sign someone for the sake of it.”

This hesitation could prove costly, as rivals Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are circling. Semenyo, who joined Bournemouth in 2023, has solidified his reputation as one of the Premier League’s standout wingers, boasting 28 goals and 13 assists in 101 appearances for the Cherries.

Dean Jones reported on November 18 that Tottenham are financially equipped to activate the release clause, while Fraser Fletcher revealed this week that Manchester United hold a “secret weapon” in their pursuit: Bournemouth’s technical director Simon Francis, a lifelong Red Devils supporter, who is expected to advocate for a move to Old Trafford if United make their move.

Both clubs are pushing for top-four finishes this season, with Tottenham also competing in the Champions League. Neither is inclined to delay until summer 2026 if they can secure Semenyo mid-campaign, potentially leaving Liverpool to rue their indecision.

As the January window looms, FSG’s caution – born from a summer of bold but underperforming investments – has thrust Liverpool into this unexpected crossroads. Will they overcome the dilemma and bolster their squad, or risk watching Semenyo thrive elsewhere? The coming weeks could define Arne Slot’s tenure at Anfield. Stay tuned for more updates as this breaking story develops.
