In a stunning trade, the Philadelphia Eagles have sent defensive end Bryce Huff to the San Francisco 49ers, shaking up the NFL landscape. Huff, a key contributor to the Eagles’ Super Bowl victory in February 2025, is now headed to the Bay Area in exchange for a 2026 mid-round draft pick, pending a physical.
Huff, who signed a $51 million contract with the Eagles last year, recently reworked his deal to facilitate the move to San Francisco. The trade reunites him with Robert Saleh, his former head coach with the New York Jets (2020-2023), who now serves as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator. During his time with the Jets in 2023, Huff recorded a career-high 10 sacks and led the NFL in pressure rate, showcasing his disruptive potential under Saleh’s guidance.

The 27-year-old Alabama native, who played college football at Memphis, is expected to bolster San Francisco’s defensive line, potentially lining up opposite veteran star Nick Bosa. While the 49ers drafted edge rusher Mykel Williams out of Georgia in the first round, the 20-year-old rookie will benefit from Huff’s experience and proven production.

Huff’s 2024 season with the Eagles was cut short by a wrist injury sustained during warmups before a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He landed on injured reserve on November 22, 2024, after undergoing surgery. In 12 games (six starts) last season, Huff recorded 13 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and one forced fumble. Over his career, which spans 66 games (13 starts) with the Jets and Eagles, he has amassed 78 tackles, 20 sacks, and two forced fumbles.
Huff isn’t the only former Jet to join Saleh in San Francisco this offseason. Linebacker Chazz Surratt and punter Thomas Morstead have also made the move, signaling Saleh’s influence in reshaping the 49ers’ roster with familiar talent. With Huff’s arrival, San Francisco’s defense gains a proven pass-rusher, setting the stage for an explosive 2025 season.
