Bring him home: Door opens for incredible return for former Liverpool attacker

Liverpool are set to lose Mohamed Salah at the end of the season, bringing the curtain down on an historic nine-year spell at Anfield. The Egyptian King, now 33, will depart on a free transfer after both parties reached an agreement to terminate his contract early — originally due to run until 2027 — and rip up his £400,000-per-week deal.

Fulham: Wales international Harry Wilson needs surgery on fractured foot - BBC Sport

Salah leaves as one of the greatest players in Liverpool’s history, having scored an astonishing 255 goals during his time at the club and winning every major trophy. Replacing a forward of his calibre and consistency is a monumental task. A like-for-like successor simply does not exist, forcing head coach Arne Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes to think creatively and identify players who can bring different qualities to the right flank and attacking areas.

One intriguing and romantic option gaining traction is the potential return of Harry Wilson.

The 29-year-old Welsh international has enjoyed a superb campaign at Fulham, contributing 10 Premier League goals and 6 assists in 29 appearances this season. Out of contract at Craven Cottage in the summer, Wilson has sparked significant interest from across the top flight, with Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Everton, Aston Villa, Leeds United, Sunderland, and even Wrexham all linked with moves for the free agent.

Yet, according to reports, an intriguing pathway back to Anfield is opening up. Liverpool have not completely ruled out re-signing the player who came through their academy system.

Wilson’s development since leaving Liverpool in 2021 has only enhanced his reputation at the club. After a series of successful loans and establishing himself as a key creative force at Fulham, the elegant left-footed attacker is viewed as a high-quality squad option who could provide valuable competition and depth, particularly as Salah prepares to depart.

Wilson can provide something different

While he is not an out-and-out winger in the mould of Salah — someone who consistently beats defenders with raw pace and directness — Wilson brings a different dimension from the right side. Capable of operating as a wide attacker or an orthodox attacking midfielder, he offers intelligent movement, a threat in behind, and high-class creativity. His ability to influence games from the flanks with precise passing and set-piece delivery would give Slot tactical flexibility.

Importantly, his arrival would not remove the need for a top-class, dynamic winger capable of taking on full-backs one-on-one. Instead, Wilson would complement such a signing, providing rotation options and a different profile when required.

Still highly regarded at Anfield

Liverpool fans would undoubtedly welcome the homecoming of one of their own. Wilson progressed through the club’s renowned academy but never made a competitive Premier League appearance for the first team before moving on. His subsequent success at Fulham — where he has matured into a reliable Premier League performer — has only increased admiration for his journey.

At 29, he is entering his prime years with valuable top-flight experience and international pedigree for Wales. Bringing him back on a free transfer represents smart, low-risk business that could resonate deeply with supporters who appreciate loyalty and stories of redemption.

Of course, competition for his signature remains fierce, and Fulham are understood to be keen on retaining their star performer. However, the door at Liverpool has not been closed, and the romantic narrative of a prodigal son returning to Anfield is one that carries genuine appeal.

As the post-Salah era begins, Arne Slot’s side will need creativity, depth, and characters who understand the club’s DNA. Harry Wilson ticks many of those boxes.

It may just be time to bring him home.
