The Washington Commanders are expected to be among the top teams in the NFL next season, which is a place the Kansas City Chiefs have been for many years.
The Chiefs are hoping to bounce back after their loss in the Super Bowl to the Philadelphia Eagles last season, and they may look to add a former Washington offensive lineman to help the team.
Bleacher Report writer Moe Moton suggested the Chiefs should sign former Washington offensive lineman Brandon Scherff.

The Kansas City Chiefs, two-time Super Bowl champions in recent years, are making waves in the free-agent market with reports indicating they are targeting Brandon Scherff, a former offensive guard for the Washington Commanders and Jacksonville Jaguars. If successful, this blockbuster signing could significantly bolster the Chiefs’ offensive line, which was a glaring weakness during the 2024 season.
Brandon Scherff’s Career Journey
Brandon Scherff, 33, has been one of the NFL’s premier offensive guards over the past decade. Selected fifth overall by the Washington Commanders (then Redskins) in the 2015 NFL Draft, Scherff quickly established himself as a standout, earning five Pro Bowl selections from 2016 to 2021 and a First-Team All-Pro nod in 2020. During his seven seasons with Washington, he was a cornerstone at right guard, providing stability to the team’s offensive line.
After leaving Washington in 2022, Scherff signed a three-year, $49.5 million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. There, he continued to showcase remarkable durability, starting all 51 games over three seasons. In 2024, Scherff allowed zero sacks across 592 pass-blocking snaps, trailing only Chiefs’ guard Trey Smith (665 snaps) among NFL offensive guards.
However, the Jaguars are now in a rebuilding phase under new general manager James Gladstone and head coach Liam Coen. With Scherff’s high salary and age, he no longer fits their long-term plans, making him a free agent following the 2024 season.
Why the Chiefs Need Scherff
The 2024 season was a challenging one for the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive line. Unable to adequately protect quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who faced a career-high number of sacks, the line struggled significantly. Issues at offensive tackle even forced the Chiefs to move guard Joe Thuney to left tackle late in the season.
Signing a veteran like Scherff could provide an immediate solution to strengthen the Chiefs’ offensive line ahead of the 2025 season. With his extensive experience and exceptional pass-blocking skills, Scherff could not only protect Mahomes but also bring stability and leadership to a unit in dire need of improvement. Moreover, Spotrac projects Scherff could sign a one-year deal worth approximately $6.7 million, a reasonable price for a player of his caliber.
A Shocking Move in the Free-Agent Market
The Chiefs’ interest in Scherff comes as a surprise, especially after their efforts to revamp the offensive line during the offseason, including signing several free agents and drafting a guard in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. However, Scherff’s addition could provide much-needed depth and experience, helping the Chiefs maintain their Super Bowl aspirations, particularly after their loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX.
Besides the Chiefs, teams like the Cincinnati Bengals, Baltimore Ravens, and Washington Commanders are also reportedly interested in Scherff. The Commanders, in particular, might consider bringing him back to fill the void left by Sam Cosmi, who is expected to miss part or all of the 2025 season due to an ACL injury. However, the allure of joining a championship contender like the Chiefs could sway Scherff to sign with Kansas City.
Impact of the Signing
If this deal comes to fruition, the Chiefs would not only strengthen their offensive line but also send a bold message to their AFC rivals. Scherff’s proven track record and consistency would address the Chiefs’ biggest weakness from the 2024 season. Additionally, his experience in high-stakes games, despite only playing in four playoff games in his career, would be a valuable asset for a team aiming to reclaim the Super Bowl title.
As the free-agent market begins to wind down, the Chiefs’ potential signing ofBrandon Scherff would be one of the most notable moves heading into the 2025 season. Can he help the Chiefs return to the top? The answer will come when the new season kicks off.
