Chiefs’ star Mahomes and wife Brittany face nightmare scenario right before camp

Patrick Mahomes and his wife Brittany, the dynamic power couple behind the Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback, have hit a rough patch in 2025, just as the NFL season looms. While their off-field empire continues to grow, with a dream home built and the joy of welcoming their third child this year, their ambitions in sports have faced crushing setbacks that have cast a shadow over their otherwise charmed life.

The first blow came in February at the Super Bowl in New Orleans, where Mahomes and the Chiefs suffered a devastating 40-22 defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles. The loss shattered their dreams of achieving a historic three-peat, leaving Mahomes and Kansas City fans reeling. The sting of that defeat still lingers as Mahomes prepares to return to the gridiron, with Chiefs training camp kicking off on July 22 and a high-stakes Week 1 showdown against the Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil fast approaching.

Compounding their challenges, the couple’s hopes of bringing a WNBA expansion franchise to Kansas City have been dashed. As investors in the Kansas City Current soccer team, Patrick and Brittany have seen firsthand the city’s passionate support for women’s sports. During Super Bowl week, Mahomes spoke enthusiastically about their vision, saying, “You see how Kansas City has embraced all sports, especially women’s sports. I’ve seen it with the Kansas City Current. I know if we were able to get a WNBA team to Kansas City, it would be packed every single night.” Their October meeting with the WNBA fueled optimism, but this week, the league delivered a crushing verdict.

According to the Sports Business Journal, the WNBA has shifted its focus away from Kansas City. Instead, Cleveland will welcome the return of the Cleveland Rockers in 2028, reviving a team that last played from 1997 to 2003. The league also announced Detroit and Philadelphia as the next cities to receive franchises in 2029 and 2030, respectively. A source revealed that the WNBA is considering expanding to as many as 18 teams, with Philadelphia, Houston, Nashville, Detroit, and Miami in the running, leaving Kansas City on the sidelines for the foreseeable future.

For Mahomes, a quarterback known for his resilience, this double blow—on the field and in his business ventures—marks a challenging chapter. Yet, with training camp just weeks away, the Chiefs’ star is poised to channel his focus back to football, aiming to reclaim glory in the NFL. As Kansas City gears up for another season, all eyes will be on Mahomes to see if he can turn setbacks into comebacks, both for himself and his city’s sports dreams.
