Cowboys Making a ‘Goldfish Brain’ Move: Plan to Trade for Target Leaves Fans Stunned, NFL Buzzing

The Dallas Cowboys are raising eyebrows across the NFL with their latest rumored trade target, and fans are scratching their heads over what some are calling a “goldfish brain” move. After a shaky start to the season, with their defense—particularly the secondary—looking like Swiss cheese in their Week 2 win over the New York Giants, the Cowboys are reportedly considering a surprising addition to their roster. But it’s not the defensive help most expected.

Following their less-than-convincing victory, Dallas made a splash by signing defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. The veteran pass-rusher is a welcome addition, bringing quarterback pressure that could give the beleaguered secondary some breathing room. However, with the NFL trade deadline looming, whispers suggest the Cowboys might not be done tweaking their roster. Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox recently dropped a bombshell, naming Cleveland Browns running back Jerome Ford as a potential trade target for Dallas. Yes, you read that right—a running back.

Knox’s logic for Ford being on the trade block is sound. The fourth-year back has fallen out of favor in Cleveland, where head coach Kevin Stefanski seems to have relegated him to a secondary role. In Week 1, Ford had just seven touches, and in Week 2, he was primarily used as a receiving back, hauling in five catches. With Ford’s contract set to expire in 2026, the Browns might be ready to cash in on the speedy back while he still has value. After all, Ford has shown flashes of brilliance, topping 500 rushing yards in each of the last two seasons and bringing breakaway speed that can turn any play into a highlight.

But here’s where the plot thickens—and where Cowboys fans are left dumbfounded. Dallas doesn’t exactly have a pressing need at running back. Javonte Williams, their starting back, has been a revelation this season, racking up 151 yards and three touchdowns through two games. More impressively, he’s averaging a robust 4.6 yards per carry—a massive leap from his 3.7 average last year in Denver. Williams is proving he can handle the load as the feature back, and the Cowboys’ ground game looks solid.

To be fair, Ford could serve as an intriguing change-of-pace option. His explosive, albeit inconsistent, running style and ability to catch passes out of the backfield make him a versatile weapon. He’s the kind of player who can turn a simple screen pass into a 50-yard sprint. But Dallas already has depth at the position. Miles Sanders has been a reliable contributor, and rookie Jaydon Blue, who has yet to make his NFL debut, is waiting in the wings. Blue, much like Ford, brings speed and versatility, raising the question: why trade for a player who duplicates what you already have?

Knox’s suggestion that Dallas could be a landing spot for Ford feels like a head-scratcher. The Cowboys’ defense, particularly their secondary, is screaming for reinforcements. While Clowney’s signing helps up front, the back end still needs work. Pursuing a running back, even one as dynamic as Ford, seems like a luxury Dallas can’t afford when their pass defense is giving up chunk plays like free samples at a grocery store.

The NFL rumor mill is buzzing with this unexpected twist, and Cowboys Nation is split. Some fans see Ford as a potential spark to an already potent offense, while others are calling it a “goldfish brain” move—a decision so perplexing it feels like the front office forgot their actual needs. Social media is ablaze with reactions, ranging from cautious optimism to outright bafflement. “Why are we chasing a running back when our DBs are getting torched?” one fan tweeted, echoing the sentiment of many.

As the trade deadline approaches, the Cowboys have a chance to address their real weaknesses. While Jerome Ford might be a shiny new toy for some teams, Dallas would be wise to focus on bolstering their defense rather than adding to an already crowded backfield. For now, this rumored move has the NFL talking—and Cowboys fans wondering if their team is playing chess or checkers.
