Cowboys spent chump change under $4 million… and possibly landed the steal of free agency

The Dallas Cowboys, historically conservative in outside free agency, took a bold approach in 2025, opening their checkbooks with fervor to bolster their roster through signings and trades. Amid the buzz surrounding running backs Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders, one key acquisition has quietly flown under the radar, potentially emerging as the steal of the offseason.

In March, the Cowboys signed former Miami Dolphins guard Robert Jones to a one-year, $3,750,000 deal—a move met with lukewarm reception from fans. With Zack Martin’s retirement leaving a void, Dallas needed viable options for the offensive line. Having invested heavily in recent drafts at left tackle, right guard, and center, Jones appeared as a sensible choice to compete for Martin’s spot.

At $3,750,000, Jones’ contract isn’t a blockbuster, but it’s far from trivial. It marks the Cowboys’ second-largest salary commitment to an outside free agent this offseason, trailing only Dante Fowler’s $6 million deal. Notably, Jones’ annual value surpasses the amounts allocated to Solomon Thomas, Payton Turner, Jack Sanborn, and even the high-profile running back duo. This investment signals the front office’s clear belief in Jones’ worth.

During organized team activities (OTAs), the Cowboys are experimenting with various offensive line combinations. The likely starting lineup—Tyler Guyton, Tyler Smith, Cooper Beebe, Tyler Booker, and Terence Steele—follows expectations. However, Jones remains a strong contender as a backup plan, ready to step in if a starter struggles or succumbs to injury.

While Jones’ grades in Miami were never exceptional, his experience and relative youth make him a promising fit. Under the guidance of Klayton Adams, one of the NFL’s top offensive line coaches, Jones has the opportunity to unlock his full potential in Dallas for the 2025 season. The front office’s decision to make him their second-highest paid free agent acquisition reflects this confidence.

With $3 million of his contract tied to a signing bonus and guarantees, Jones is virtually assured a roster spot. Ideally, the projected starting five will hold strong, and Jones won’t need to see the field. Still, the Cowboys’ valuation of him—evidenced by their financial commitment—suggests they see something special. As training camp approaches, fans should keep a close eye on Robert Jones, who, for under $4 million, might just prove to be the steal of free agency.
