Diggs KO’d: Cowboys’ Lockdown Corner on IR After Concussion, Out at Least a Month

The Dallas Cowboys have placed star cornerback Trevon Diggs on injured reserve due to ongoing concussion symptoms, the team announced Saturday. Diggs, a key piece of the Cowboys’ secondary, will miss a minimum of four games and is eligible to return for the team’s Thanksgiving matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Diggs, 27, suffered the concussion following an accident at his home on October 16. While details of the incident remain limited, Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer noted on Friday that the team has more information but will leave it to Diggs to share when he next speaks with the media.

This marks the third consecutive season that Diggs will spend time on injured reserve. After signing a lucrative five-year, $97 million contract extension in 2023 following back-to-back Pro Bowl campaigns, Diggs has been plagued by injuries. In 2023, he missed 15 games due to a torn ACL, and last season, a knee injury requiring surgery sidelined him for six games. Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones, speaking on 105.3 The Fan on Friday, indicated that Diggs has been dealing with additional ailments, and the stint on injured reserve could provide an opportunity for him to regain full health.

With Diggs sidelined, the Cowboys will turn to Kaiir Elam to start opposite DaRon Bland in the secondary. In last week’s game, when the team deployed three cornerbacks, Bland shifted to the slot, while Trikweze Bridges took on outside duties.

The Cowboys’ defensive backfield is facing further challenges, as the team will also be without both starting safeties for the upcoming game. Juanyeh Thomas was ruled out Saturday due to a migraine affecting his vision, while Donovan Wilson was ruled out Friday with a shoulder injury. Additionally, starting safety Malik Hooker remains on injured reserve with a toe injury, further thinning the Cowboys’ secondary.

In another roster decision, the Cowboys opted to keep center Cooper Beebe on injured reserve despite his participation in practice this week. Beebe, recovering from a broken bone in his foot, is expected to benefit from an additional week of practice before returning to game action. Brock Hoffman will continue to start at center in his absence.

As the Cowboys navigate these injuries, the team faces a critical stretch of games without several key defensive starters, putting added pressure on the depth of their roster to step up.
