Eagles Make a Stealthy Move: Former 5-Star Recruit Eli Ricks Lands on Philly’s Practice Squad in Shocking Twist

The Philadelphia Eagles are leaving no stone unturned in their quest to build a formidable 70-player roster, making calculated moves to fine-tune their practice squad. On Friday, the team announced a series of roster adjustments that brought back two familiar faces while parting ways with others, signaling their relentless pursuit of depth and talent.

The Eagles welcomed back outside linebacker Antwaun Powell-Ryland and cornerback Eli Ricks to the practice squad, injecting a dose of proven potential into the roster. Powell-Ryland, a sixth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft from Virginia Tech, is no stranger to making plays. During his final collegiate season with the Hokies, he racked up an impressive 16 sacks—ranking third among all FBS players—and 19 tackles for loss. His disruptive presence carried into the NFL preseason, where he notched a sack and a forced fumble in the Eagles’ finale against the Jets. Though he was released during the final roster cuts, Powell-Ryland’s return to the practice squad on Wednesday, followed by Friday’s confirmation, underscores Philly’s belief in his upside.

The bigger surprise, however, is the return of Eli Ricks, a former five-star recruit whose journey has been nothing short of a rollercoaster. Ricks, who made the Eagles’ 53-man roster as an undrafted free agent in 2023, spent two seasons with the team before being waived on roster cutdown day this year. His re-signing to the practice squad on September 24 was a quiet move, but his return on Friday has sent ripples through the Eagles’ fanbase. Known for his raw athleticism and playmaking instincts, Ricks’ presence adds intrigue and potential to a secondary already brimming with talent.

To accommodate these additions, the Eagles made the tough decision to release defensive end K.J. Henry and defensive tackle Jacob Sykes from the practice squad. This move reverses transactions made just a day earlier on Thursday, highlighting the fluid nature of roster management in the NFL.

Henry, a former fifth-round pick by the Washington Commanders in 2023, has had a nomadic journey through the league. With stints in Washington, Cincinnati, and Dallas, the Clemson product has appeared in 14 regular-season games, showcasing his versatility. His standout moment this preseason came with a pick-six against the Eagles while playing for the Cleveland Browns, a play that likely caught Philly’s attention. After a brief return to the Eagles’ practice squad on Thursday, Henry’s release on Friday suggests the team is prioritizing other pieces for now.

Similarly, Jacob Sykes, an undrafted free agent from UCLA in 2023, was let go to make room for the new additions. Sykes’ path has taken him from the Seattle Seahawks to the San Antonio Brahmas of the United Football League before landing with the Eagles on July 22. Despite his brief tenure on the practice squad, the team opted to move on, signaling their confidence in the incoming talent.

These moves are more than just roster shuffling—they reflect the Eagles’ meticulous approach to building a championship-caliber team. Powell-Ryland’s pass-rushing prowess and Ricks’ high-upside potential as a former five-star recruit make them intriguing pieces for the practice squad, offering depth and development opportunities. Meanwhile, the releases of Henry and Sykes demonstrate the front office’s willingness to make tough calls in pursuit of the perfect roster balance.
