In a dramatic twist to one of the summer’s most intriguing transfer sagas, Arsenal have emerged as serious contenders for Atalanta’s Brazilian midfielder Ederson Silva, directly challenging Manchester United’s long-standing interest in the player. Reliable journalist David Ornstein has confirmed the Gunners’ pursuit, signalling a potential Premier League tug-of-war that could reshape both clubs’ midfield plans heading into the post-World Cup window.
Ederson, 26, has established himself as one of Serie A’s most reliable and dynamic central midfielders since joining Atalanta from Salernitana in a €23 million deal in June 2022. Over 174 appearances for La Dea, the Brazilian has contributed 15 goals and five assists, playing a key role in Atalanta’s Europa League triumph two seasons ago and their consistent challenge for a top-four finish in Italy.
His contract runs until June 2027, but Ederson has no intention of extending, leaving Atalanta with little choice but to entertain offers this summer rather than risk losing him for a reduced fee further down the line. His agent, Andre Cury, hinted at flexibility late last year, suggesting the price could drop to between €30-40m (£26-35m), though Atalanta are understood to be holding out for closer to €50m (£43.5m). Suitors believe a deal around the €40m mark is realistic.
Ornstein, in his latest Q&A for The Athletic, identified Ederson’s departure from Bergamo as one of the moves most likely to be completed early in the window. He noted the widespread managerial uncertainty across Europe currently stalling business, compounded by the upcoming World Cup, but stressed that “all parties expect him to go” with one year left on his deal and no renewal in sight.
“His agent is said to be working hard at it,” Ornstein added. “There’s interest from the likes of Atletico Madrid, Manchester United, Arsenal and others.”
Manchester United have been linked with Ederson for over 18 months as they look to overhaul their midfield following the expected exits or reduced roles of veterans like Casemiro. The Red Devils are prioritising Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson as their primary target but still require a more cost-effective, high-quality option to add depth and energy — a profile Ederson fits perfectly.
However, Arsenal’s late entry into the race has the potential to derail United’s plans. Despite boasting a strong midfield core featuring Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard, Mikel Merino, and Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Arteta could still see value in Ederson. The possible departure of Christian Nørgaard would create space, and the Brazilian’s box-to-box qualities, defensive solidity, and goal threat would offer the Gunners additional tactical flexibility as they aim to close the gap on the Premier League’s top sides.
The situation is further complicated by Atletico Madrid’s stalled interest. Reports earlier this month suggested Atleti had agreed personal terms on a four-year deal with Ederson, but negotiations with Atalanta have not advanced, largely due to a significant gap in valuation. Diego Simeone’s side are only willing to pay around €38m, well short of the Italian club’s demands. This impasse has opened the door for Premier League clubs to pounce.
With managerial clarity still lacking at several clubs and the World Cup set to delay much of the early summer business, Ornstein expects a frantic period of activity once the tournament concludes. Ederson’s availability, combined with his agent’s proactive approach, positions him as one of the first major dominoes likely to fall.
For Arsenal, securing the 26-year-old would represent a shrewd, relatively affordable reinforcement — a classic Arteta-style addition blending physicality, technical quality, and proven pedigree in European competition. For Manchester United, it would sting as another high-profile target slipping away to their London rivals, further highlighting the challenges of rebuilding under current constraints.
As the transfer window heats up, all eyes will be on Bergamo. Will Arsenal pull off a silent coup at the Emirates, or can United fight back and finally land their long-term midfield target? One thing is certain: Ederson’s next destination is set to send shockwaves through the Premier League.
