Experts Say This 24-Year-Old Eagle Could Make or Break Philly’s Season – And He’s Flying Under the Radar

The Philadelphia Eagles’ pass rush took a significant hit this offseason, losing key contributors Milton Williams and Josh Sweat to free agency and saying goodbye to franchise legend Brandon Graham, who retired after 15 years and two Super Bowl victories. To address these losses, the Eagles brought in external talent like Josh Uche, Azeez Ojulari, and 2025 first-round draft pick Jihaad Campbell. However, the team’s hopes for a dominant defensive front in the 2025 NFL season may hinge on an internal option—a 24-year-old edge rusher who’s quietly emerging as a game-changer: Nolan Smith.

Pro Football Focus analysts Max Chadwick and Dalton Wasserman have dubbed Smith the Eagles’ “X-factor” for the 2025 season, highlighting his potential to fill the void left by the departed stars. “Philadelphia lost longtime contributors Josh Sweat and Brandon Graham this offseason, which puts third-year man Nolan Smith in the spotlight off the edge,” they noted. “Smith posted a solid 68.3 PFF pass-rush grade last season as he began to earn more playing time. In Philadelphia’s four postseason games, he racked up 19 pressures and four sacks. If he can produce at that level for a full season, the Eagles will have no problem replacing their departed stars.”

Selected in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, Smith had a modest rookie season, playing in all 17 games but not starting any, finishing with one sack and 18 tackles. His role expanded significantly in 2024, where he appeared in 16 games, started 10, and showcased his potential with 6.5 sacks, 42 total tackles, and 11 quarterback hits. This breakout campaign demonstrated his ability to disrupt opposing offenses, particularly in high-stakes postseason moments.

If Smith can elevate his game further and step into a starring role in 2025, the Eagles’ pass rush could remain a force to be reckoned with. His youth, athleticism, and recent production suggest he’s ready to take on the challenge. While the additions of Uche, Ojulari, and Campbell bolster the defensive line, it’s Smith—flying under the radar—who could be the key to unlocking Philadelphia’s defensive potential and making or breaking their season.
