Forget Barcola. Forget Diomande. Liverpool’s REAL target is a man who failed at Barcelona and Wolves. And they’re PAYING £52m for him. BOLD.

As Mohamed Salah prepares to write the final chapter of his Liverpool career at the end of this season, the Anfield hierarchy is already moving decisively to shape the next era on the right flank.

While links to exciting young talents like Bradley Barcola and Yan Diomande have dominated headlines, Liverpool are taking concrete steps toward a more experienced — and controversial — option: Sporting CP’s Francisco Trincão.

The 26-year-old Portuguese winger has reignited his career in Lisbon, and sources indicate Liverpool “intend” to sign him this summer, with the club showing real intent according to recent reports.

A Second Chance for a Talented Flop

Trincão’s journey has been anything but straightforward. A product of Braga’s academy, he earned a big-money move to Barcelona before loan spells at Wolves failed to ignite. Many wrote him off as another bright prospect who couldn’t handle the physical and tactical demands of top-level football in England or Spain.

Yet at Sporting CP, where he joined permanently in 2023, Trincão has rebuilt his reputation. Operating primarily as a left-footed right-sided attacker, he functions more as a creator and half-space operator than a traditional touchline winger. He receives between the lines, drives inside with purpose, combines intelligently, and possesses sharp ball-striking ability from dangerous areas.

This season, his form has been impressive enough to attract serious Premier League interest, with both Liverpool and Chelsea monitoring him closely. A full Portugal international, Trincão now enters his prime with renewed confidence and a clear profile that could complement Liverpool’s attacking setup post-Salah.

The €60m Release Clause Factor

Sporting are under no immediate pressure to sell. Trincão is contracted until 2030, and his deal includes a substantial €60 million (£52m) release clause. That figure provides Sporting with significant leverage — they can demand close to the full amount from any interested top club.

For Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes, meeting or approaching that valuation would represent a bold statement. At 26, Trincão is no longer a risky teenager but also not yet a finished superstar, sitting somewhere between proven pedigree and remaining upside. The fee reflects both his resurgence and the premium on versatile, creative attackers in today’s market.

Style and Limitations

Analysts note that while Trincão offers subtle passing, intelligent movement, and goal threat from the half-spaces, he is not the most explosive athlete. He can be streaky and has historically struggled when matches turn into intense, physical battles — a concern that will be scrutinised heavily at Anfield, where intensity is non-negotiable.

However, his ability to create and shoot from central areas could provide Jürgen Klopp’s successor with a different tactical dimension on the right, potentially allowing Liverpool to evolve rather than purely replicate Salah’s role.

The Bigger Picture

With Salah’s £400k-per-week contract reportedly being cut short by mutual agreement, Liverpool are entering a period of significant squad evolution. Targeting Trincão while still monitoring younger, pacy options like Barcola and Diomande suggests a multi-pronged recruitment strategy — one that balances immediate quality with long-term potential.

Sporting CP will use the Champions League as their premier shop window, but if Liverpool’s interest is as strong as reports suggest, a summer bid structured around that €60m clause could test their resolve.

Francisco Trincão failed in England once before. Liverpool clearly believe he is ready to succeed where he previously struggled — and they are prepared to back that conviction with serious money.

It’s a high-risk, high-reward move. Bold indeed.
