HE’S BACK: Patriots’ 6’2″ Rookie Unexpectedly Dropped Then Makes Spectacular Comeback Before Crucial Week 12 Game Against Bengals

FOXBOROUGH, MA — In a whirlwind of roster moves that left fans scratching their heads, the New England Patriots have brought back a promising young talent just in time for a pivotal stretch in their season. Rookie safety John Saunders Jr., the 6’2″, 211-pound defensive dynamo, was unexpectedly released from the team’s 53-man roster earlier this week—only to make a stunning comeback by signing to the practice squad. As the Pats gear up for their Week 12 clash against the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium, Saunders’ return adds much-needed depth and versatility to a secondary that’s been tested all year.

The move comes at a critical juncture for New England, who are pushing for a playoff spot under head coach Mike Vrabel. Saunders, an undrafted free agent who initially caught the NFL’s eye with the Miami Dolphins, had been on the Patriots’ radar long before he donned their colors. The team hosted him for a pre-draft visit, drawn to his multi-positional prowess—a perfect fit for the adaptive defensive scheme orchestrated by defensive coordinator Terrell Williams and interim play-caller Zak Kuhr. Capable of lining up at free safety, strong safety, in the slot, or even at cornerback, Saunders embodies the “do-it-all” mentality that’s become a hallmark of Vrabel’s unit.

Saunders’ journey to this point has been anything but straightforward. Hailing from High Point, North Carolina, he spent three seasons at Miami (Ohio) before transferring to Ole Miss for his senior year in 2024. Over his collegiate career, he appeared in 49 games, amassing an impressive stat line: 179 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 11 interceptions, 25 pass deflections, five fumble recoveries, and one defensive touchdown. His final season with the Rebels was a breakout, leading the SEC in turnovers with three interceptions and four forced fumbles. That production turned heads, but as an undrafted rookie, he had to fight for every opportunity.

Signed by the Dolphins in May, Saunders flashed his potential during preseason action, notably picking off a pass and returning it 51 yards against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Though waived during final cuts, he stuck around on Miami’s practice squad until the Patriots poached him on October 30, elevating him straight to their active roster. His brief stint included a game-day appearance in New England’s Week 11 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he contributed on special teams and provided spot relief in the secondary.

So, why the sudden drop? The release was part of a broader series of roster tweaks aimed at optimizing the team’s lineup amid injuries and performance evaluations. But the Patriots clearly weren’t ready to let Saunders slip away entirely. By re-signing him to the practice squad, they’ve kept him in the fold as a prime candidate for game-day elevations—especially if injuries hit their starting safeties, Jaylinn Hawkins and Craig Woodson, or key reserves like second-year pro Dell Pettus. Even special teams ace Brenden Schooler and hybrid linebacker Marte Mapu have seen time in the backfield, underscoring the group’s emphasis on flexibility.

“This is a guy we’ve believed in from the start,” a team source told reporters, speaking on condition of anonymity. “His size, speed, and ball-hawking instincts make him a Swiss Army knife in our defense. With the Bengals’ high-powered offense looming, having that extra layer of depth could be huge.”

As New England eyes a deep playoff run, Saunders’ comeback story adds an intriguing subplot. The Bengals, led by quarterback Joe Burrow and a potent receiving corps, will test the Pats’ secondary like few teams have this season. If Saunders gets the call-up, expect him to channel that preseason magic and make an impact. For now, his return is a reminder that in the NFL, fortunes can change in an instant—and sometimes, the best comebacks happen right where you started.

The Patriots and Bengals kick off this Sunday at 1 p.m. ET, with New England looking to build on their recent momentum. Stay tuned for more updates as the team finalizes its game plan.
