IT’S TIME! Liverpool takes first step in $85M Antoine Semenyo transfer for January

Liverpool FC is wasting no time in addressing their faltering Premier League campaign, with reports emerging that the Reds have initiated “concrete talks” to secure Bournemouth striker Antoine Semenyo in a blockbuster $85 million deal when the January transfer window opens.

The Anfield giants, currently mired in 12th place after a dismal run of six defeats in their last seven league matches, are desperate for reinforcements to salvage what has been a disappointing season so far. Despite splashing around $600 million on high-profile summer signings like Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, and Florian Wirtz, Liverpool’s attack has sputtered, managing just two goals in their most recent three outings. Enter Semenyo, the 24-year-old Ghanaian forward who has lit up the Premier League with six goals and three assists in just 11 appearances for Bournemouth this term.

According to sources from Sky Sports, Liverpool is actively pursuing the trigger of Semenyo’s release clause, valued at up to £65 million ($85.3 million), which activates in January. The clause was inserted following Semenyo’s contract extension with the Cherries last season, tying him to the club until 2030. While Bournemouth would prefer to retain their star asset, the allure of a massive payday and Semenyo’s potential to thrive at a bigger club could prove irresistible.

This move marks Liverpool’s first concrete step toward bolstering their squad mid-season, signaling a clear intent to turn things around under mounting pressure. The Reds’ interest isn’t isolated, however—Manchester United and Manchester City are also circling, with United reportedly keen on adding firepower to their own squad. Adding intrigue, Semenyo is said to have previously discussed a potential move with Ruben Amorim before recommitting to Bournemouth, though Amorim’s current role at Manchester United could complicate matters.

Semenyo’s absence from Bournemouth’s recent goalless draw against West Ham due to a minor issue hasn’t dampened his stock. His explosive form, combining pace, power, and clinical finishing, makes him an ideal fit for Liverpool’s high-pressing style. Fans at Anfield will hope he can provide the spark needed to reignite their title aspirations—or at least secure a top-four finish.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has downplayed speculation for now, emphasizing focus on the present. Speaking last week, Iraola said: “We are in November. Antoine is our player. He will continue being our player. In January, you can ask me about the market in January, but right now I’m not worried about the next markets. It’s something that especially you know that I hate to talk about in August, January, the moments when the market is open, but it is not one of those moments. It’s November. I’m more worried about the situation of the players to play tomorrow, the short-term, the things that really matter and in January, we will talk about whatever happens, the players we need. But it is not something that I’m worried about today.”

Semenyo himself remains grounded amid the swirling rumors. In a recent interview, he stated: “I don’t think about it too much. I try to stay present as much as I can. You see the news all the time, I see it as well, I’m not oblivious, but I try to keep focused.”

As the January window approaches, all eyes will be on whether Liverpool can outmaneuver their rivals and land Semenyo. If successful, this $85 million swoop could be the catalyst for a dramatic turnaround at Anfield. It’s time for action—will the Reds pull the trigger?
