Kansas City’s Worst Nightmare Confirmed: Chiefs’ Receiver Handed Major Suspension Six Games for Off-Field Incident.

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has been hit with a significant six-game suspension by the National Football League, a decision that deals a blow to the team’s offensive lineup as the 2025 season kicks off. The NFL announced the suspension on Wednesday, citing a violation of the league’s personal conduct policy. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Rice accepted the suspension, forgoing a scheduled hearing set for September 30, which was to be moderated by former federal judge Sue L. Robinson at the NFL’s New York City headquarters.

The suspension stems from a high-speed car crash in Dallas on March 30, 2024, where Rice, driving a 2020 Lamborghini Urus SUV at 119 miles per hour, and his former SMU teammate Theodore Knox, were racing sports cars on a freeway during rush hour. The reckless incident triggered a chain-reaction crash involving six vehicles, resulting in injuries and significant property damage. On July 17, Rice pleaded guilty to two third-degree felony charges: collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury. As part of his plea agreement, he was sentenced to five years of probation and 30 days of jail time, which can be served during the probation period. Additionally, Rice is required to pay $115,481.91 in restitution to cover the victims’ medical expenses, as confirmed by the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office.

In a statement released through his lawyer, Royce West, Rice expressed remorse for his actions: “Last March, I was involved in a high-speed accident in Dallas. There have been a lot of sleepless nights thinking about the damages that my actions caused, and I will continue working within my means to make sure that everyone impacted will be made whole. I urge everyone to mind the speed limit, drive safe and drive smart. Last and certainly not least, I am profoundly sorry for the physical damages to person and property. I fully apologize for the harm I caused to innocent drivers and their families.”

The suspension means Rice will miss the Chiefs’ first six games of the 2025 season, including high-profile matchups such as a Week 1 trip to Brazil to face the Los Angeles Chargers, a Week 2 Super Bowl rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles, primetime games against the New York Giants (Week 3), Jacksonville Jaguars (Week 5), and Detroit Lions (Week 6), and a critical AFC showdown with the Baltimore Ravens in Week 4. Rice, a second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft from SMU, has not played since Week 4 of the 2024 season due to a knee injury sustained against the Chargers when quarterback Patrick Mahomes inadvertently dove into his knee during a tackle attempt after an interception.

Before his injury last season, Rice was a cornerstone of Kansas City’s offense, amassing 24 receptions for 288 yards and two touchdowns in the first three games of 2024. His absence leaves a gap in the Chiefs’ receiving corps, but the team appears prepared. On Tuesday, the Chiefs finalized their 53-man roster, notably retaining eight wide receivers—an unusual move likely designed to compensate for Rice’s suspension. The team will rely on players like Xavier Worthy, Hollywood Brown, Tyquan Thornton, Juju Smith-Schuster, Nikko Remigio, and Jason Brownlee to fill the void until Rice is eligible to return in Week 7 for the Chiefs’ matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.

The suspension marks a challenging chapter for Rice, who showed immense promise as a key target for Patrick Mahomes. As the Chiefs navigate the early weeks of the season without him, the focus will be on how the team adapts and whether Rice can return to form after his time away from the field.
