Liverpool’s goalkeeping department underwent a big change last summer.
We saw Giorgi Mamardashvili complete his long-awaited move from Valencia while Caoimhin Kelleher went to Brentford. Two more goalkeepers arrived as part of the shakeup with Armin Pecsi coming in as well as Freddie Woodman.
Alisson Becker of course remains No1 – and is set to reign in the Anfield net for another seasons at least – but the recruitment process never stops.
Now it appears that the Premier League champions are about to get involved in a transfer scrap with Manchester United for a young goalkeeper creating a “buzz” at his current club.
The North West derby isn’t confined to the pitch anymore. It’s spilling into the transfer market, and this time the prize is a 19-year-old Welsh wonderkid who’s turning heads far beyond the Cymru Premier.
Kit Margetson, the highly-rated Swansea City goalkeeper currently on loan at Connah’s Quay Nomads for the 2025/26 season, has suddenly become the hottest property in goalkeeping circles. According to a report in the Daily Mail, Manchester United are actively pursuing a deal for the youngster, with Tony Coton—the scout credited with landing Senne Lammens—spotted in Flintshire recently running the rule over him.
Coton’s presence created quite a buzz in North Wales, and for good reason. Margetson, son of former Manchester City keeper and current Wales goalkeeping coach Martyn Margetson, is no ordinary loanee. The Wales under-age international has been a standout performer during his stint at Connah’s Quay, racking up clean sheets and minutes in a side that went on an impressive unbeaten run. His maturity, distribution, and shot-stopping have him earmarked as a potential star at the highest level.
But United aren’t alone in the chase. Liverpool and Crystal Palace are also named among the interested parties, turning what could have been a quiet acquisition into a full-blown Premier League tug-of-war. The fact that two of English football’s most storied—and fiercest—rivals are now locked in battle over the same teenage talent elevates this from routine scouting to outright warzone territory.
For Liverpool, the interest makes perfect strategic sense. With Alisson locked in as the undisputed number one, the club has been methodical in refreshing the goalkeeping depth chart. Mamardashvili’s arrival signals long-term planning, but adding another high-potential youngster like Margetson could provide competition and succession planning for years to come. Interestingly, there’s a Welsh connection that might give the Reds an edge: Margetson could slot into Liverpool’s under-21 side, coached by former Wales manager Rob Page. The two families go way back—Page and Martyn Margetson shared squads for Wales U21s in the early 90s, played together at Cardiff City, and overlapped during Page’s senior international days. While Martyn didn’t serve on Page’s national team staff from 2020-2024, that personal history could open doors in negotiations or development pathways.
Manchester United, meanwhile, see Margetson as a potential future-proofing move. With questions lingering over Andre Onana’s consistency, Coton’s scouting trip suggests the Red Devils are looking beyond the immediate to build depth and secure the next generation. Landing a talent who’s already impressing on loan while attracting multi-club attention would be a statement of intent from INEOS-era recruitment.
The stakes are sky-high because this isn’t just about one player—it’s about supremacy in the modern transfer arms race. Liverpool and United have spent decades defining English football’s elite rivalry through trophies, but now they’re clashing over future assets in the shadows of lower leagues. A win here could tilt the balance for a decade, providing either side with a reliable homegrown (or at least British-developed) goalkeeper who understands pressure from an early age.
Swansea will have the final say, and they’ve already shown steel by rejecting a six-figure bid from Brighton earlier in the cycle. But with United pushing and Liverpool circling, the asking price is only heading one way—up.
Europe is on notice because when Liverpool and Manchester United go head-to-head off the pitch, the rest of the continent feels the tremors. This battle for Kit Margetson isn’t just heating up; it’s boiling over. And whoever emerges victorious might just have secured the next great English/Welsh No.1 before the rest of the world even realizes he’s ready.
The old rivalry never dies—it evolves. And right now, it’s evolving into something far more dangerous.
