NFL Trade Bomb: Cowboys Eyeing David Njoku – Could This Be the Move That Reshapes the NFC?

The Dallas Cowboys have been aggressive this offseason, executing four trades to bolster their roster with players poised to make an immediate impact in the starting lineup. The standout move was acquiring electrifying wide receiver George Pickens from the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for draft picks. This trade pairs Pickens with All-Pro receiver CeeDee Lamb and quarterback Dak Prescott, forming a passing attack that could rival the NFL’s elite offensive trios.

With high-profile free agency moves likely done and training camp on the horizon, the Cowboys appear set to roll with their current roster. However, speculation is swirling about a potential blockbuster trade that could further elevate Dallas’ offense. According to Anthony Palacios of Last Word On Sports, the Cleveland Browns, who are entering a rebuild and recently drafted promising tight end Harold Fannin, might consider trading Pro Bowl tight end David Njoku.

Njoku, in the final year of his contract, has been one of Cleveland’s top performers in recent seasons. However, with the Browns ushering in a new era—complete with a revamped quarterback room—they may look to hand the reins to rookie Fannin. Uncertainty at quarterback could also prompt Njoku to seek a move next offseason, leading Cleveland to explore trading him now to maximize value.

Palacios suggests the Cowboys as a potential landing spot, despite Dallas already having a former Pro Bowl tight end in Jake Ferguson. “Last season, tight end Jake Ferguson had one of the worst campaigns in his career. He’s hopeful to make a huge turnaround, even though it might seem bright after trading for George Pickens,” Palacios noted. “However, anything could happen, and Njoku provides a lot of experience that the Cowboys could benefit from if Luke Schoonmaker can’t step up behind Ferguson.”

Ferguson’s 2024 season was indeed a step back, hampered by injuries to himself and his quarterback. Still, entering just his fourth NFL season, the Cowboys remain optimistic about “Big Biscuit” rebounding. There’s no indication that Dallas is looking to move on from him. In 2023, when both players earned Pro Bowl nods, Njoku recorded 81 catches for 881 yards and six touchdowns, slightly outpacing Ferguson’s 71 receptions, 761 yards, and five scores—despite Njoku having five more years of experience and more targets.

The Cowboys are banking on Ferguson capitalizing on the attention drawn by the Lamb-Pickens duo, which should create opportunities over the middle of the field. Adding Njoku, while tempting due to his experience and athleticism, could create a crowded situation with too many players demanding touches. Under first-year head coach Brian Schottenheimer, Dallas may prefer to avoid such complications.

While the Cowboys are unlikely to part with additional draft capital, the idea of Njoku joining forces with Lamb, Pickens, and Prescott is tantalizing. If executed, this trade could reshape the NFC, giving Dallas an offensive juggernaut capable of dominating defenses. For now, it remains a fantasy—but one that keeps Cowboys fans dreaming of a Super Bowl run.
