Olivier Giroud, the former Arsenal striker, has sent shockwaves through the football world by revealing the surprising reason he turned down a potential reunion with his old Gunners teammate Laurent Koscielny at Lorient. Instead, the 38-year-old Frenchman has chosen to sign with Lille, a decision that has left Arsenal fans disappointed and nostalgic for the days when Giroud and Koscielny were key figures at the Emirates.

Giroud, who recently concluded an underwhelming stint with Los Angeles FC (LAFC) in the MLS, where he scored just 5 goals in 38 appearances, decided to return to his homeland. Despite Koscielny, now the sporting director at Lorient, reaching out to his former teammate, Giroud opted for Lille—a club competing in the Europa League and sitting among Ligue 1’s top teams.
Speaking candidly to Canal Plus, Giroud opened up about his decision: “Koscielny approached me. I was honest with him and said my adventure at LAFC might be over because I wasn’t finding joy anymore. Koscielny and I are very close, but I had to think carefully. Lille is playing in Europe and is among the top teams in Ligue 1. It’s a completely different project.”
The decision marks a significant moment for Giroud, who shared countless memories with Koscielny during their time at Arsenal, including lifting three FA Cups together. However, their friendship wasn’t enough to sway Giroud toward Lorient, a club that recently returned to Ligue 1 and faces the daunting task of avoiding relegation.
Lille, on the other hand, presented an opportunity too good to pass up. Having lost their star striker Jonathan David to Juventus, the club was in desperate need of an experienced forward to lead their attack. Giroud, with his proven track record and hunger for European competition, emerged as the perfect fit.
The veteran striker, who has already won both the Europa League and Champions League with Chelsea, admitted that the prospect of competing in Europe again was a major factor in his decision. “Playing in European competitions is something I still crave,” Giroud told Canal Plus. “It’s a chance to test myself at the highest level, even at this stage of my career.”
For Arsenal fans, the news is bittersweet. Many had hoped to see Giroud reunite with Koscielny, rekindling memories of their successful partnership at the Emirates. However, Giroud’s ambition to continue competing at a high level with Lille has closed the door on that possibility, leaving supporters to reflect on what might have been.
As Giroud prepares to embark on this new chapter with Lille, his determination to chase European glory proves that, even at 38, his competitive fire still burns brightly. Meanwhile, Lorient and Koscielny will have to look elsewhere for inspiration as they fight to secure their place in Ligue 1.
