Packers’ Gamble: Packers Risk $13,25 Million Bet Placed on Watson’s Amid ACL Rehab

The Green Bay Packers have made a bold move by securing a one-year, $13.25 million contract extension for wide receiver Christian Watson, despite his ongoing recovery from a torn ACL. The agreement, finalized on Tuesday night and reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, signals the team’s confidence in Watson’s potential to return to form and contribute significantly in the 2025 season.

Watson, a 2022 second-round pick (No. 34 overall) out of North Dakota State, suffered the ACL injury during the Packers’ final regular-season game of 2024, a loss to the Chicago Bears. The injury sidelined him for the start of the 2025 season, landing him on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. While no exact timeline for his return has been confirmed, the Packers remain optimistic that Watson can reclaim his role as a dynamic playmaker for a significant portion of the season.

Last season, Watson showcased his big-play ability, recording a career-high 620 receiving yards and two touchdowns on 29 catches, with an impressive team-leading average of 21.4 yards per catch. His speed and athleticism have made him a key component of Green Bay’s offense, but his recovery from such a significant injury introduces uncertainty. Torn ACLs often require extensive rehabilitation, and while Watson has expressed resilience in the face of adversity, the road back to peak performance is challenging.

“It’s definitely tough. Any time you have an injury like this, it’s definitely going to take its toll on you,” Watson said in August, per the Packers’ official site. “But I’ve gone through a lot of adversity. Nothing like this, but I feel like I was calloused for it a little bit and I had the right mentality going into it and it’s been keeping that the whole way through.”

The Packers’ decision to extend Watson’s contract, rather than letting him play out the final year of his initial four-year, $9.2 million rookie deal, reflects a calculated gamble. By committing $13.25 million for 2025, the team is betting on Watson’s ability to return to his explosive form and bolster an offense that showed promise in their season-opening 27-13 victory over the Detroit Lions. The extension also provides Watson with security and an opportunity to prove his value for a potential long-term deal in the future.

However, the financial commitment carries risks. ACL injuries can alter a player’s trajectory, and Watson’s limited time on the field this season could hinder his ability to demonstrate full recovery. The Packers are banking on his mental toughness and prior performance to justify the investment, but the uncertainty surrounding his return timeline adds pressure to both the player and the organization.

As the Packers prepare to host the Washington Commanders on Thursday night, their early-season success suggests a team poised for a playoff push. Watson’s eventual return could provide a significant boost, but for now, Green Bay’s $13 million bet remains a high-stakes wager on a player whose immediate future remains uncertain.
