In a moving revelation, Monyetta Shaw-Carter, a friend of the popular show “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” (RHOA), has shared her journey of overcoming breast cancer, an experience that not only highlights the importance of early detection but also underscores the power of community support. In an interview with People published on May 31, Shaw-Carter recounts how a seemingly innocuous feeling in her left breast led to a cancer diagnosis that changed her life.
Shaw-Carter first noticed something was off in September 2024. Following her instinct, she scheduled her annual mammogram, which revealed a concerning lump. It was then she received the shocking diagnosis of stage 1 invasive ductal carcinoma. After undergoing surgery and radiation therapy, she celebrated the conclusion of her treatment on May 2.
In her heartfelt words, Shaw-Carter emphasized the significance of proactive health measures, stating, “Because I caught the cancer early, I will be here for my kids. There’s nothing more important than getting checked often and early to protect your future. Our health is irreplaceable.” Her gratitude towards the medical professionals who supported her during this trying time was palpable: “I can’t thank my exceptional doctors and nurses enough. They are our heroes!”
The reality star reflected on her treatment decisions, admitting that at first she considered a double mastectomy. However, with the results of her genetic testing coming back favorable, along with careful consideration of her circumstances, she opted for a lumpectomy instead.
Shaw-Carter’s experience highlighted not only the cancer journey but also the compassion and support from her circle, including her ex-partner Ne-Yo and fellow RHOA cast members. Describing Ne-Yo’s encouragement, she shared, “He was just showing up for me in a major way and just always asking and making sure everything was okay. He was like, ‘Oh, you’re gonna beat this.’” Castmate Kandi Burruss also stepped up, immediately asking, “What can I do?” A testament to the close-knit friendships formed amidst the drama of reality TV.
Fans have rallied behind Shaw-Carter since her diagnosis, showering her with love and support. One fan wrote, “Love you sis! Praying for God’s healing to cover you,” while former RHOA producer Carlos King expressed his solidarity, stating, “Praying and healing your way, doll.” This overwhelming reaction from fans further illustrates the special bond that exists between reality stars and their viewers.
Reflecting on her time with RHOA, Shaw-Carter had previously expressed that filming the latest seasons was a delightful experience, although she admitted, “Nothing can prepare you for the ‘Housewives of Atlanta,’ honey.” Despite initial challenges, she embraced her role and noted the evolution of her persona on the show, determining to be true to herself.
As a mother of two, Shaw-Carter’s story resonates deeply with many, serving as both a call for awareness about breast cancer and a rich reminder of the strength found in community support. Her journey raises an important question: How can we better support those in our lives facing similar battles?
