In a heartfelt revelation, Kate Garraway has opened up about a deeply unsettling, unaired moment from Celebrity Traitors that left her gasping in shock—triggered by haunting memories of her late husband’s passing. The beloved Good Morning Britain host, who was eliminated in the show’s eighth episode (with the finale airing on Thursday, November 6), shared the “strange” incident that forced her to confront her grief in the most unexpected way.

It all unfolded during a chilling challenge in episode two, where contestants encountered coffins as part of the game’s eerie setup. Walking alongside comedian Alan Carr, with actress Celia Imrie leading the way, Kate suddenly froze. “You don’t know what’s coming next, and so you find yourself walking on by the coffins,” she told The Sun. “I did a double-take, I gasped, and I was walking with Alan and Celia was in front of me.”
The sight hit too close to home for Kate, whose husband, Derek Draper, tragically died in January 2024 at age 56 after battling severe complications from Covid-19. Overcome with emotion, she confided in her co-stars and the production team: “I said, ‘God, I don’t know whether I should carry this coffin.’ And I had a chat with the production team who checked on me all the time. You know, there was a psychologist there.” She added, “But you’re suddenly in the moment and I said, ‘I’m not sure. I think it’s a bit strange and a bit weird.'”
Despite her initial hesitation, Kate received compassionate support not just from the show’s executives and on-site psychologist, but also from Alan and Celia, who offered her counseling in that vulnerable moment. Yet, true to her resilient spirit, Kate stepped up when she saw fellow contestants Charlotte Church and Paloma Faith struggling with the task. She joined in, pushing through her discomfort, and ultimately felt okay about it afterward.

But Kate’s concerns extended beyond herself—she worried deeply about the impact on her children, Darcey and Billy, who have been navigating their own grief since losing their father. This raw vulnerability echoes the emotional journey Kate documented in her poignant ITV special, Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story, which chronicled Derek’s final year.
In a separate, touching interview with Hello! back in February, Kate shared another wave of sorrow that ambushed her during a simple home task. While hanging a long-awaited picture on the wall, she stepped back to admire her handiwork and instinctively thought, “Derek will love this when he sees it.” In an instant, reality crashed in: “Then, in the same second, I remembered and a whole tsunami of sadness at what is lost swept over me.”
Through it all, Kate is determined to embrace life’s joys amid the pain, modeling strength for her kids. “Seizing all the good and new that life throws at you alongside the sad is what I am focusing on and trying to model for Darcey and Billy, too,” she said. Her story is a powerful reminder of how grief can surface in the most unforeseen moments, even on a reality TV set.
