Shocking decision: Becoming captain was the most surprising news for the Patriots’ cornerback.

In a stunning moment for the New England Patriots, fourth-year cornerback Marcus Jones was named one of six team captains for the 2025 season, a decision that caught the versatile player off guard. When head coach Mike Vrabel gathered the team for a huddle before the first practice of the week, Jones was unprepared for the announcement that he, alongside quarterback Drake Maye, tight end Hunter Henry, linebackers Harold Landry and Robert Spillane, and special teamer Brenden Schooler, had been voted by their teammates to wear the coveted captain’s patch.

For Jones, the news was nothing short of shocking. “I definitely was (surprised),” Jones admitted in the locker room after practice. Known for leading by example rather than being vocal, the honor carried deep significance. “To be a captain of this team, it shows a lot,” he added, reflecting on the trust his teammates placed in him.

This marks the first time Jones, a third-round pick from the 2022 draft, has been named a captain in his NFL career. He shares the distinction of being a first-time captain with quarterback Drake Maye and special teams standout Brenden Schooler, a fellow member of the 2022 rookie class. The bond between Jones and Schooler, who entered the league together—Jones as a drafted player and Schooler as an undrafted free agent from Texas—made the moment even more special. “It’s cool because me and School came in together and everything, so seeing both of us together … is great,” Jones said with a smile.

Jones, who also serves as the Patriots’ dynamic punt returner, has had an impressive offseason heading into a pivotal contract year. Despite his undersized frame, his relentless effort and larger-than-life playstyle have clearly resonated with his teammates. “The standard is the standard, no matter how many years you’ve played in the league,” Jones emphasized. “Making sure that day-by-day, you always give it 110 percent.”

While this is Jones’ first time wearing the captain’s “C,” he’s no stranger to observing great leadership. During his early years with the Patriots, he looked up to two future Patriots Hall of Fame inductees, Matthew Slater and Devin McCourty. “That was one of my guys that was in the room with us and led by example,” Jones said of McCourty, noting how their influence shaped his approach to leadership.

For head coach Mike Vrabel, the selection of new captains like Jones signals a fresh chapter for the team. “Every year’s a new year in this league,” Vrabel said. “The leadership has to grow. Whether it’s a captain—we talked about not having any restrictions on leadership—and hopefully at whatever level we have guys that can lead.” Vrabel’s vision is clear: while captains wear the patch, the team’s success hinges on fostering leadership at every level.

As the Patriots gear up for the 2025 season, Jones’ unexpected rise to captaincy underscores the team’s evolving identity. For a player who thrives on defying expectations, this shocking honor is just the beginning.
