STUNNING SEASON-ENDER: The 49ers Just Pulled the Plug on Their Rookie’s Year in a Brutal Roster Shake-Up.

In a move that underscores the harsh realities of the NFL, the San Francisco 49ers have officially ended the 2025 season for one of their promising rookies. Linebacker Nick Martin, a third-round draft pick, was placed on the Injured Reserve list due to a lingering concussion, effectively shutting down his debut year with just weeks left in the regular season. This decision not only highlights Martin’s struggles but also casts a shadow over the entire 2025 draft class for the Niners, which is increasingly looking like a bust.

Martin’s journey in 2025 has been anything but smooth. Selected at No. 75 overall, the athletic linebacker was expected to step up as a potential replacement for veteran Dre Greenlaw, bringing speed and versatility to a defense in need of fresh talent. However, from the preseason onward, Martin faced challenges that kept him sidelined. His tackling inconsistencies and apparent difficulties adapting to the team’s complex defensive scheme limited his opportunities on the field. In total, he logged just 12 defensive snaps this season, with 11 of those coming in a single game against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 11.

The concussion that sealed his fate occurred three weeks ago, and despite hopes for a quick recovery, Martin has been unable to shake the symptoms. Placing him on Injured Reserve this late in the year—on December 21, 2025—means there’s virtually no chance of a return before the season wraps up. It’s a brutal blow for a player who was just starting to see increased playing time amid injuries to the linebacker corps and a leaky run defense that could have benefited from his contributions. The 49ers’ depth issues at the position made Martin’s potential role even more critical, but now, fans and coaches alike are left wondering what could have been.

This setback isn’t just about one player; it’s emblematic of broader disappointments in San Francisco’s 2025 draft haul. While a few standouts like Mykel Williams, Alfred Collins, CJ West (albeit reluctantly), and Upton Stout have shown promise, the rest of the class has largely underperformed. Martin, as the highest-profile letdown among them, epitomizes the frustration. Third-round picks aren’t typically selected for special teams duty—they’re meant to be immediate contributors. Unfortunately, Martin’s season has been a wasted opportunity, whether due to his own shortcomings or the team’s inability to integrate him effectively.

Looking ahead, the Niners will be hoping for a full recovery and a strong offseason from Martin. He’ll need to hit the ground running in 2026 to carve out a meaningful role and redeem this forgettable rookie campaign. For now, though, this roster shake-up serves as a stark reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in the league, leaving the 49ers to regroup and refocus on salvaging what’s left of their 2025 push.
