THE BELLI OPT-OUT: Yankees on the Brink as Superstar Plans His Escape from New York

The New York Yankees’ 2025 season ended in bitter disappointment, and now the franchise faces another seismic shift. Star outfielder Cody Bellinger, a cornerstone of their offensive lineup, is poised to opt out of his contract for the 2026 MLB season, according to a Friday report from ESPN. With free agency looming, the 30-year-old’s departure could leave a gaping hole in the Bronx Bombers’ roster as they brace for an uncertain offseason.

Bellinger, who inked a three-year, $80 million deal with the Chicago Cubs after the 2023 season, has one year left on his contract, carrying a $25 million salary for 2026. The deal included player options after the first and second seasons, giving the two-time All-Star the flexibility to test the open market. Now, fresh off a career-best performance since his 2019 National League MVP campaign with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Bellinger appears ready to cash in.

In 2025, Bellinger was a force for the Yankees, showcasing his versatility across all three outfield positions while posting a stellar 12 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS). At the plate, he delivered a .272/.334/.480 slash line, crushing 29 home runs, driving in 98 RBIs, and swiping 13 bases. His 5 Wins Above Replacement (WAR) marked his highest output since his MVP days, reminding the baseball world of his elite talent. But in the postseason, Bellinger’s bat cooled, managing just one home run and four RBIs with a .214/.258/.393 slash line over seven games. The Yankees’ playoff run ended abruptly, as they dispatched the Boston Red Sox in three games in the AL Wild Card Series only to fall to the Toronto Blue Jays in four games in the AL Division Series.

The Yankees acquired Bellinger last offseason from the Cubs, along with cash considerations, in exchange for right-hander Cody Poteet. The move paid dividends, with Bellinger proving to be a dynamic presence in the lineup and outfield. Yet, his potential exit casts a shadow over New York’s future. Bellinger isn’t the only key player eyeing free agency—outfielder Trent Grisham and first baseman Paul Goldschmidt are also set to hit the open market, leaving the Yankees at a crossroads.

As Bellinger prepares to explore his options, the Yankees must grapple with the loss of a superstar in his prime. Will they make a bold move to re-sign the versatile outfielder, or will “Belli” find a new home, leaving New York to rebuild once again? The offseason just got a lot more complicated for the Bronx faithful.
