The shock couldn’t be worse: The final injury report has just confirmed an extremely serious absence.

The Minnesota Vikings are gearing up for their Week 4 showdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Dublin, Ireland, but the team’s final injury report, released on Friday, has delivered a crushing blow to their defensive lineup. The absence of star outside linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel, ruled out due to a neck injury, headlines a series of setbacks that will leave the Vikings significantly shorthanded as they face a formidable Steelers offense led by quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Andrew Van Ginkel: A Critical Loss

Andrew Van Ginkel, a veteran pass rusher who joined the Vikings in 2024 after five seasons with the Miami Dolphins, has been a cornerstone of Minnesota’s defense. Coming off a Pro Bowl season, Van Ginkel’s 2024 stats speak for themselves: 79 tackles, 18 tackles for a loss, 11.5 sacks, six pass deflections, two interceptions, and two defensive touchdowns in 17 games. His ability to disrupt opposing offenses, often single-handedly, has earned him a reputation as one of the NFL’s premier edge rushers. His absence in Week 4 is a massive blow, especially after a performance last week against the Cincinnati Bengals where he recorded two sacks in just eight defensive snaps before exiting early with the neck injury.

SI.com’s Joe Nelson reported, “Andrew Van Ginkel has been ruled out for Sunday’s Week 4 game in Dublin between the Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers.” The injury’s origin remains unclear, as Van Ginkel appeared on the injury report for the first time on Wednesday, despite playing in Minnesota’s dominant 48-10 victory over the Bengals. His absence means the Steelers, and specifically Aaron Rodgers, won’t have to contend with the threat of a “Gink-Six”—a term coined after Van Ginkel’s interception return for a touchdown against Rodgers and the New York Jets in London last year.

As Steelers Depot’s Tom Jaggi noted, “Van Ginkel is one of Minnesota’s best players, so his inability to suit up again this week is a major blow to the Vikings’ defense… The veteran pass rusher is one of the best splash playmakers at the edge rusher position in the NFL, and he’s capable of wrecking the game on a moment’s notice.” Without Van Ginkel, the Vikings will struggle to generate consistent pressure on Rodgers, potentially giving the Steelers’ offense a significant edge.

A Depleted Defense: Blake Cashman Also Sidelined

The Vikings’ defensive woes don’t end with Van Ginkel. Inside linebacker Blake Cashman, another key starter, remains on injured reserve and will miss the game in Dublin. Cashman, who has been sidelined for two games, is not expected to return until at least Week 7 against the Philadelphia Eagles. The absence of both starting linebackers leaves Minnesota’s defense vulnerable, particularly against a Steelers team known for its balanced offensive attack.

Additional Absences Pile On

The injury report also confirmed that rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy will miss his 19th game in a possible 21 to start his career, as he continues to recover from an ankle injury. Head coach Kevin O’Connell has tapped veteran Carson Wentz to make his second consecutive start in Dublin. Wentz performed admirably in last week’s blowout win over Cincinnati, completing 14-of-20 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns, but McCarthy’s prolonged absence raises concerns about his long-term health and readiness.

Rookie left guard Donovan Jackson is another unexpected casualty. Jackson, who played well in Week 3, underwent surprise wrist surgery on Monday in Los Angeles and is expected to miss at least the next couple of games, potentially returning after the Vikings’ Week 6 bye. Rookie tight end Ben Yurosek is also sidelined, leaving T.J. Hockenson, Josh Oliver, and veteran Nick Vannett to handle the tight end duties.

A Glimmer of Hope: Kelly and Hargrave Cleared

Amid the grim injury news, there are two bright spots. Center Ryan Kelly, who suffered a concussion in Week 2 and missed Week 3, has been cleared to play after progressing through the league’s concussion protocol. Defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, who was dealing with a chest injury sustained against Cincinnati, also worked his way back to full participation and is set to suit up in Dublin. Their return provides some stability to an otherwise depleted roster.

The Vikings’ injury-ravaged roster faces a daunting challenge in Week 4. Without Van Ginkel, Cashman, McCarthy, Jackson, and Yurosek, Minnesota will need to rely on depth players and veterans like Wentz to keep their season on track. The team’s Week 6 bye offers a potential turning point, with players like Jackson and Cashman eyeing returns shortly after. For now, however, the Vikings must dig deep to overcome the absence of key contributors, starting with their star edge rusher, Andrew Van Ginkel.

As the team prepares to face the Steelers in Dublin, the loss of Van Ginkel looms large. His ability to create game-changing plays—whether through sacks, interceptions, or defensive touchdowns—will be sorely missed. The Vikings will need to rally together and hope their depth can hold the line against a Pittsburgh team looking to capitalize on Minnesota’s misfortune.
