DALLAS – One week. That’s all that separates the NFL from the 2025 trade deadline, and the Dallas Cowboys are once again staring down the barrel of their own chaos. On Tuesday, ESPN’s Ed Werder dropped a bomb: the Cowboys have held zero contract-extension talks with breakout wideout George Pickens. Zero. Nada. Zilch.

Remember, this is the same guy Jerry Jones shipped a 2026 third-rounder to Pittsburgh for in the offseason – a “win-now” splash that now looks like it’s teetering on the edge of a cliff.
Pickens has been electric in Big D. Opposite CeeDee Lamb, he’s torching secondaries, making Dak Prescott’s life easier, and proving the Steelers might already be kicking themselves. In an ideal world, No. 1 is hauling in bombs from Dak for the next half-decade. But this is Dallas, where “ideal” and “reality” rarely share the same zip code.

Let’s not sugarcoat it: the Cowboys’ track record on extensions is a five-alarm dumpster fire.
- Dak Prescott: Dragged to the finish line – twice.
- CeeDee Lamb: Held out until the 11th hour.
- Micah Parsons: Talks turned so toxic the team shipped their All-Pro edge to Green Bay.
Sure, Dallas turned around and locked up DaRon Bland, Tyler Smith, and fullback Hunter Luepke right after the Parsons deal. Cute. But that’s like bragging about patching the roof after the house already burned down.
Here’s the cold truth: Pickens is in a contract year. He’s balling out. And the trade deadline is seven days away. If Jerry and Stephen Jones pull their usual “wait-until-the-market-sets-the-price” routine, they’ve already handed Pickens every ounce of leverage. Why sign now when you can hit free agency and let the bidding war commence?
Nothing – nothing – is stopping Dallas from getting a deal done today. Except, you know, Dallas.
This isn’t a call to ship Pickens out (Lord, no – keep the man in Arlington). But it is a scream into the void for a plan. Any plan. Because right now? The Cowboys are a walking contradiction:
- Trade a future third for Pickens → “We’re all-in!”
- Trade Micah Parsons → “Future first!”
Pick a lane, fellas.
If there is a North Star guiding this franchise through the noise, what the hell is it? Re-tool around Dak and Lamb? Tank for a quarterback in ‘26? Blow it up and start over?
Seven days. One week to show America’s Team has a pulse – and a blueprint.
Because right now, the only thing shocking louder than Werder’s report is the silence coming from The Star.
