UNEXPECTED CUT! : Patriots RB Quietly on the Chopping Block After 1st Preseason Game

The New England Patriots kicked off their 2025 NFL preseason with a commanding 48-18 victory over the Washington Commanders, showcasing a mix of veteran reliability and youthful promise. While the team celebrated standout performances from young running backs TreVeyon Henderson and Lan Larison, the game may have quietly signaled the end of the line for veteran running back JaMycal Hasty.

A Dominant Preseason Opener

The Patriots’ offense looked sharp against the Commanders, with Henderson and Larison stealing the spotlight. Henderson electrified the crowd with a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the game, demonstrating his big-play potential. Larison, meanwhile, capped off a strong performance with a 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. With established veterans Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson anchoring the running back room, the depth chart is becoming increasingly crowded—and Hasty may be the odd man out.

JaMycal Hasty’s Tenure in New England

Hasty, a six-year NFL veteran, joined the Patriots in 2023 after being claimed off waivers. Previously, he spent time with the San Francisco 49ers and Jacksonville Jaguars. In his most recent season with New England, Hasty saw limited action, appearing in 15 games but recording just 20 carries, 10 receptions, and 10 kick returns. Despite the small sample size, he proved effective as a returner, amassing 238 yards on those 10 returns.

Before his NFL career, Hasty was a standout at Baylor, where he played in 45 games over four years. He racked up 1,998 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground, while adding 79 receptions for 485 yards and one touchdown through the air. Despite his college production, Hasty went undrafted in 2020, carving out a journeyman career in the pros.

A Crowded Backfield

The Patriots’ running back situation leaves little room for Hasty. Stevenson and Gibson remain the unquestioned leaders of the backfield, with Henderson emerging as a dynamic playmaker. Henderson’s receiving ability and knack for explosive plays make him a likely candidate for a significant role in the offense. Larison, too, has shown enough promise to warrant a roster spot. With these options, Hasty’s limited offensive contributions and role as a return specialist may not be enough to secure his place on the team.

What’s Next for Hasty?

At 28 years old, Hasty still offers value as a veteran presence and a capable returner, but the Patriots’ roster decisions are driven by necessity. If Hasty cannot carve out a clear role, the team may opt to use his roster spot for a younger player or someone with more immediate impact. The upcoming preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings on August 16th at 1 PM will be critical for Hasty and other bubble players fighting to prove their worth.

As the Patriots refine their roster, Hasty’s time in New England may be nearing its end. His performance in the next game could determine whether he defies the odds or becomes an unexpected cut in a competitive backfield.
