Wait… Did the Eagles Really Just Claim Saquon Barkley’s Backup Off Waivers?!

The Philadelphia Eagles, fresh off their second Super Bowl victory in February, continue to make waves in the NFL with a roster move that bolsters an already formidable running game. Last season, the Eagles showcased dominance across offense, defense, and special teams, leaving few weaknesses for opponents to exploit. Their ground attack, however, stood out as a cut above the rest, averaging an NFC-best 179.3 rushing yards per game—leading a conference that boasted four of the NFL’s top five rushing offenses.

On Friday afternoon, the Eagles added another weapon to their backfield by claiming former Jacksonville Jaguars running back Keilan Robinson off waivers, the team announced. To make room on their 90-man roster, Philadelphia waived wide receiver Ife Adeyi. Robinson, a fifth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, was released by the Jaguars on Thursday, hitting the waiver wire just a day before finding his new home in Philadelphia.

In his rookie season with Jacksonville, Robinson appeared in six games, primarily contributing on special teams. He returned two kickoffs for a total of 34 yards, hinting at his potential as a dynamic return specialist. With Philadelphia’s backfield already stacked, it’s likely the Eagles will utilize Robinson in a similar special teams role. The team’s running back room is headlined by MVP candidate Saquon Barkley, who delivered a jaw-dropping 2,000-yard season in 2024, coming tantalizingly close to breaking Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record—potentially thwarted only by conservative coaching decisions.

The Eagles’ depth chart doesn’t stop there. Alongside Barkley, they have Will Shipley and AJ Dillon, the latter bringing four years of experience as a featured back with the Green Bay Packers. This crowded backfield underscores Philadelphia’s commitment to maintaining one of the league’s most potent rushing attacks.

As the Eagles progress through Organized Team Activities (OTAs), they are gearing up for a one-day mandatory minicamp on June 10. With Robinson’s addition, Philadelphia continues to fine-tune a roster that looks poised to defend their Super Bowl title with the same relentless dominance that defined their 2024 campaign.
