Warriors trade 6-foot-3 guard to Grizzlies after blockbuster seven-team deal

The Golden State Warriors made waves in the NBA on Sunday with two significant trades, headlined by a blockbuster seven-team deal involving two-time NBA champion Kevin Durant. Following that high-profile transaction, the Warriors executed a separate trade with the Memphis Grizzlies, parting ways with the draft rights to Tennessee guard Jahmai Mashack, the No. 59 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

In the deal with Memphis, the Warriors sent Mashack, the draft rights to wing Justinian Jessup (the No. 51 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft), and a future conditional second-round pick to the Grizzlies. In exchange, Golden State acquired the draft rights to guard Will Richard, the No. 56 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. The trade was announced by the Grizzlies on Sunday, adding depth to their roster as they aim for a second consecutive playoff appearance in the 2025-26 season.

Mashack, a 22-year-old California native, earned recognition as a standout defender during his senior year at Tennessee, where he was named to the 2024-25 SEC All-Defensive Team. Starting all 38 games for the Volunteers, he helped lead the team to its second straight Elite 8 appearance. Mashack averaged 6.0 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.7 steals in 28.2 minutes per game, while ranking fourth in the SEC in defensive rating. Though his offensive game remains a work in progress, his defensive tenacity could have been a valuable asset for Warriors head coach Steve Kerr.

The trade initially sparked confusion among fans and analysts, particularly after ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Warriors had received Mashack as part of the Durant deal. This seemed contradictory, as Golden State had acquired rookies Alex Toohey and Will Richard on draft night. However, it’s now clear that while Toohey will remain with the Warriors, Mashack is headed to Memphis.

For the Grizzlies, Mashack’s defensive prowess adds an intriguing piece to a young, competitive roster. Meanwhile, the Warriors are banking on Will Richard to bolster their second unit. Richard, a product of Florida, made an impressive summer league debut against the San Antonio Spurs, posting 16 points, four rebounds, and two steals. If this performance is any indication of his potential, Golden State’s bench could see a significant boost in the upcoming season.

The Warriors’ flurry of moves underscores their aggressive approach to reshaping the roster around their championship core. While parting with a defensive talent like Mashack may sting, Richard’s early promise suggests the Warriors’ second unit is in capable hands as they prepare for the 2025-26 campaign.
