William Saliba slams door on Real Madrid transfer with Arsenal contract statement

William Saliba will sign a new long-term deal with Arsenal, ending any talk of a move to Real Madrid with the defender in the final two years of his current contract

William Saliba has put an end to speculation about a potential move to Real Madrid by committing his future to Arsenal with a new long-term contract. The French centre-half, widely regarded as one of Europe’s premier defenders, has been a cornerstone of Arsenal’s resurgence under manager Mikel Arteta. With his current deal entering its final two years, the Gunners moved swiftly to secure their defensive linchpin, opening contract talks in May to fend off interest from the Spanish giants.

Real Madrid, known for targeting players nearing the end of their contracts—such as Antonio Rudiger, Kylian Mbappe, and Trent Alexander-Arnold—had been closely monitoring Saliba’s situation. However, the 24-year-old has consistently expressed his contentment in north London, and his decision to sign a new deal at the Emirates underscores his loyalty to Arsenal. The agreement not only solidifies his status as Arsenal’s highest-paid defender but also reflects his standing as one of the continent’s elite in his position.

Saliba’s importance to Arsenal cannot be overstated. Last season, he featured in 51 matches across all competitions, playing more Premier League minutes than any other outfield player for the club over the past two campaigns. His partnership with Gabriel at the heart of Arsenal’s defense has earned widespread praise, with the duo forming what many consider Europe’s most formidable backline. Despite Arsenal’s trophy drought since their 2020 FA Cup triumph, Saliba’s contributions have been pivotal in their consistent second-place finishes in the Premier League and their run to the Champions League semi-finals last term.

Originally signed from Saint-Etienne under Unai Emery, Saliba endured several loan spells in France before cementing his place in Arteta’s squad. His rise to prominence has coincided with Arsenal’s ability to retain their top talent, with players like Gabriel, Leandro Trossard, Ethan Nwaneri, and Myles Lewis-Skelly also signing new contracts in recent months. This collective commitment highlights the club’s upward trajectory and ambition to compete at the highest level.

Speaking in July about the prospect of a new deal, Saliba said, “Yes, hopefully—of course there is nothing now, but there is a good conversation with my agent and the club. Let’s see.” Those discussions have now borne fruit, with the new contract signaling his intent to remain a key figure in Arsenal’s project.

For Arsenal fans, Saliba’s decision is a major coup, slamming the door on Real Madrid’s interest and reinforcing the club’s defensive foundation. As Arteta’s side continues to challenge for major honors, Saliba’s presence will be crucial in their quest to end their trophy drought and establish themselves among Europe’s elite.
